Productions Manager information

What does a productions manager do?

A Productions Manager oversees the entire production process in manufacturing or media, ensuring that operations run efficiently, safely, and on schedule. They coordinate between different departments, manage staff, allocate resources, and solve problems that arise during production. Additionally, they are responsible for quality control, budgeting, and maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Their role is critical to meeting production goals and maintaining product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by a productions manager, and how can they be addressed?

Productions Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing tight deadlines with limited resources, coordinating between multiple departments, and handling unexpected disruptions like equipment failures or supply chain delays. Effective communication, proactive planning, and strong problem-solving skills are essential for navigating these obstacles. Building strong relationships with team members and suppliers, as well as using project management tools, can help ensure smooth production workflows and minimize downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a productions manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Productions Manager, you need strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills, typically supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field, and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with production management software (such as ERP or MRP systems), lean manufacturing principles, and safety certifications is often required. Effective communication, adaptability, and the ability to motivate teams are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring efficient production processes, meeting deadlines, and maintaining high quality and safety standards.

Job description

Production Manager

Seals Productions

Seals Productions is looking for an experienced Production Manager to take ownership of the technical execution of our live events.

This is a senior, hands-on leadership position for someone with significant real-world experience in live production. You don’t need to be an expert in every discipline, but you need to understand how professional audio, lighting, video, staging, rigging, and power systems work together—and know what good execution looks like.

Responsibilities

  • Take sold productions from contract through execution and load-out
  • Develop technical plans, equipment needs, staffing requirements, and production logistics
  • Lead production crews and make on-site technical decisions
  • Coordinate audio, lighting, video, staging, rigging, and power
  • Work directly with clients throughout the production process
  • Manage individual show budgets and make cost-conscious production decisions
  • Ensure equipment is properly prepared, deployed, returned, and cared for
  • Work with our warehouse and technical teams to prepare upcoming productions
  • Troubleshoot problems and keep productions moving
  • Maintain Seals Productions’ standards for quality, professionalism, and safety

Experience & Technical Knowledge

5–10+ years of professional live-production experience preferred.

Candidates should have substantial experience managing live events and working with multiple production disciplines, including:

  • Audio
  • Lighting
  • Video / LED
  • Mobile staging
  • Rigging
  • Power distribution
  • Production logistics

You do not have to be an A1, L1, V1, and staging expert all at once.

However, you need enough experience to understand what each department is doing, communicate effectively with specialized technicians, identify problems, and make informed decisions.

Technical knowledge and real-world production experience will be evaluated during the hiring process.

Who We’re Looking For

We want someone who is confident enough to make things happen and humble enough to accept criticism.

You should be:

  • A strong leader and decision-maker
  • Fun, upbeat, and positive
  • Organized and dependable
  • Comfortable taking ownership
  • Calm under pressure
  • Able to lead people without having an ego
  • Willing to jump in and get the job done when necessary

Safety is our #1 priority. You must have the judgment to recognize unsafe situations and the confidence to stop or change a plan when necessary.

Schedule & Travel

Seals Productions produces corporate events, festivals, church events, and other live productions throughout the region.

Travel typically occurs 2–3 times per month, depending on the season. When not on-site, you’ll work with our team preparing upcoming productions and equipment.

Growth Opportunity

We’re looking for more than someone who can run shows.

The right person will have the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility within Seals Productions, with the potential to eventually oversee much of the company’s day-to-day operations.

We’re looking for someone who wants to take ownership, build a great team, and grow with the company.

Company Description

Seals Productions is a full-service live event production and A/V integration company based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We provide professional audio, lighting, video, mobile staging, and technical production services for corporate events, festivals, churches, concerts, and special events throughout the Southeast.

In addition to live production, we design and install permanent audio, video, lighting, and control systems for churches, businesses, venues, and other facilities.

Since 2013, we’ve built our company around doing things right, taking care of people, and delivering work we’re proud to put our name on. Our culture is built around three things: Character, Competence, and Chemistry.

We’re a growing, hands-on company that works hard, solves problems, has fun, and takes ownership of the job. We’re looking for great people who want to grow with us and help take Seals Productions to the next level.
