What does a productions assistant do?

A Production Assistant (PA) is an entry-level crew member who supports the production team in a variety of ways on a film, television, or commercial set. Their responsibilities can include tasks such as setting up equipment, managing paperwork, running errands, coordinating talent and crew, and assisting with logistics on set. The job often requires flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. PAs are essential for keeping the production running smoothly and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a productions assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Production Assistant, you need strong organizational abilities, multitasking skills, and a basic understanding of production processes, with a high school diploma or relevant experience often required. Familiarity with production scheduling software, call sheets, and basic office tools like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace is important. Proactive communication, problem-solving, and the ability to work well under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure smooth day-to-day operations, effective team support, and the ability to adapt quickly to the fast-paced demands of production environments.

What are some common challenges faced by productions assistants, and how can they overcome them?

Production Assistants often encounter fast-paced, high-pressure environments where multitasking and adaptability are crucial. Common challenges include managing time effectively, handling last-minute changes, and communicating clearly with various departments. To overcome these, PAs should stay organized, proactively seek clarification when unsure, and remain flexible to shifting priorities. Building strong working relationships and maintaining a positive attitude can also help navigate the demands of the role.

Productions assistants often start with little or no experience, as entry-level roles focus on providing support and learning on the job. Relevant skills include organization, communication, and familiarity with production equipment, and some employers may offer on-the-job training or require basic certifications. Experience can improve prospects, but many productions assistants begin their careers without prior industry experience.

How do I get into a productions assistant?

Production Assistant / Film & TV Intern

AIP Connect

Toronto, ON

CA$20 - CA$25/hr

Full-time, Internship

Posted 7 days ago

Job description

Open Vacancy: This role is a current, active position and we are accepting applications.

Our client is one of North America's leading producers of non-scripted content. They have produced and directed over 70 documentaries and filmed productions-including award-winning features, live television, stage-to-screen productions, and new scripted and unscripted developments-with work recognized across premier international film festivals including TIFF.

About the Role

We are seeking a smart, energetic, and resourceful Production Assistant / Film & TV Intern to join a fast-moving production team. This is an initial 4-month paid contract with potential to transition into a permanent full-time role.

In this position, you will work directly alongside experienced filmmakers and producers, gaining hands-on exposure to the end-to-end business of creating film and television. Your focus will span research, development, production logistics, administrative coordination, and pitch support, offering direct insight into how projects move from initial concept to screen.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Assist development and production teams across documentary, live TV, stage-to-screen, and new scripted/unscripted projects.

  • Conduct thorough research and assist in moving projects from initial concept through development into production.

  • Coordinate production logistics, workflow organization, and daily operational support.

  • Support senior filmmakers and producers with project organization and changing production needs.

  • Handle both high-level creative tasks and essential day-to-day unglamorous production work.

What We're Looking For
  • Relevant Experience: 1-3 years of experience in film, media, or television production (or equivalent hands-on project experience). High initiative, quick learning agility, and strong organizational skills are equally valued.
  • Industry Passion: A genuine drive for film, television, non-scripted storytelling, and entertainment.

  • Resourcefulness: A proactive problem-solver who takes initiative rather than waiting for step-by-step direction.

  • Exceptional Organization: Sharp attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Discretion & Maturity: Professional attitude when dealing with high-profile talent, partners, and confidential development materials.

  • Strong Communication & Tech Skills: Clear written and verbal communication; comfortable learning new digital workflow tools.

  • Adaptable Work Ethic: Willingness to handle both high-level creative support and the essential, unglamorous day-to-day tasks that keep production moving.

  • Availability & Location: Ability to work in-person in Toronto, ON during standard hours (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM), with flexibility for occasional early mornings or late days during active production cycles.

Position Details & Compensation
This is an in-person, 4-month paid contract paying $20.00 - $25.00/hour based on experience, with strong potential to transition into a full-time role for the right candidate.
To Apply
Please submit your resume along with a brief cover note outlining why you want to build your career in film/television and what makes you a great fit for a fast-paced, entrepreneurial production environment.
