What is a production sound designer?

Production Sound Designers are audio professionals responsible for creating the overall soundscape of a film, television show, theater production, or other media project. They collaborate with directors and other team members to design and implement all aspects of the audio environment, including dialogue, sound effects, background noises, and sometimes music. Their work helps to establish the mood, atmosphere, and realism of a production, ensuring that the audio complements the visual storytelling. They may also oversee recording on set, post-production sound editing, and audio mixing.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a production sound designer?

To thrive as a Production Sound Designer, you should have expertise in audio engineering, sound editing, and a solid understanding of acoustics, often supported by a degree in audio production or related field. Familiarity with industry-standard digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, as well as proficiency in field recording equipment and sound libraries, is critical. Strong collaboration, creativity, and attention to detail help you communicate with directors and realize the creative vision of a project. These skills ensure that audio elements enhance storytelling, maintain technical quality, and deliver an immersive audience experience.

How does a production sound designer collaborate with directors and other departments during a project?

Production Sound Designers work closely with directors to understand the creative vision and ensure that the audio elements support the storytelling. They also liaise with departments such as cinematography and post-production to coordinate on-set sound capture, manage ambient noise, and plan for any special audio requirements. Regular meetings and clear communication are essential, as the sound designer must anticipate technical challenges and align their work with the project's overall schedule and artistic goals. This collaborative approach helps deliver a cohesive final product that meets both creative and technical standards.

Job description

Device Brand Studio, an internal agency within the Devices group at Amazon, is seeking a talented Motion Designer to help bring new Amazon offerings to market, products, services, and features within our devices portfolio. The Motion Designer will own motion and film craft for product lines and campaigns within Amazon Devices, from concept through final delivery, including new-to-world and new-to-Amazon launches.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in motion design, animation, and editorial craft, and the ability to take a brand story and translate it into work that holds up in a keynote, a 15-second cutdown, and a social loop without losing the idea. You will work closely with creative directors, ACDs, and copywriters to develop motion concepts, storyboard and previs ideas, then execute polished final work, iterating based on feedback and factoring in timeline and platform requirements

You should be comfortable pitching motion concepts to creative leads and stakeholders, and have the technical range to move between styleframes, animation, and edit. You should have working knowledge of brand guidelines and creative briefs at a top consumer-facing brand like Amazon.
Because the work is varied, fast-paced, and often tied to hard launch dates, you should have strong technical craft and the ability to manage multiple concurrent motion projects at different stages of production. You will partner with creative directors, art directors, editors, sound designers, and production to deliver motion work across campaign film, keynote content, product detail pages, and social.
This role is for a strong motion craft lead with hands-on production experience, who can take a concept from styleframe to final cut and present work clearly to creative leads and stakeholders.
Key job responsibilities
Own motion design and animation execution for assigned campaigns and launch moments, from concept through final delivery
Develop styleframes, storyboards, and animation concepts that translate brand strategy into motion
Edit and finish film and motion content for keynote, campaign, and social deliverables
Partner with creative directors and art directors to develop and pitch motion concepts and territories
Collaborate with editors, sound designers, and production to keep motion work on schedule and technically sound
Give feedback and technical guidance to junior motion designers on the team
Maintain technical and craft standards across motion deliverables as formats and platforms evolve
