Summary
Provides direct and indirect supervision to subordinate team leaders and professional employees performing diverse roles. Work requires application of in-depth knowledge of professional standards and precedents in area of specialty. Receives assignments in the form of objectives and sets goals to achieve objectives. Establishes and recommends changes to policies. Develops or assists in the development of department budgets and goals. This includes establishing three to five year plans/objectives, and developing policies for the function/unit. Accountable for dept results and for activities or projects involving multi-functional teams. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules. Provides direct supervision to others, or indirect through subordinate supervisors, and coordinates the activities of a section or department with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees. Makes hiring and firing decisions. Reviews employees performance and recommends employee compensation; coaches for improved performance and disciplines as necessary. Provides final approval for subordinate managers/supervisors salary and performance recommendations. Builds cross-functional relationships where persuasive skills, negotiation skills, and considerable tact are required to gain support. Interacts directly with subordinates and peer groups; interfaces with senior managers on issues related to the area of expertise. Maintains positive relationships with key customers, suppliers, etc., who have a significant impact on the success of the organization.
Detailed Description
Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:
  • Manages resources responsible for assembling, testing and repairing products in a manufacturing site generally with fewer than 400 employees.
  • Plans, manages and controls department performance by establishing overall direction and priorities.
  • Establishes policies and guidelines and evaluates results.
  • Establishes production metrics, tracks metrics and sets realistic production goals to maximize throughput.
  • Recommends and manages the work unit budget.
  • Advocates for and allocates appropriate resources, tools, equipment and support to meet production requirements.
  • Acts as an interface between production and other product related functions.
  • Drives and promotes quality workmanship and continuous improvement in all manufacturing processes.
  • Participates in cross-functional product teams and process improvement groups.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies
  • In-depth knowledge of the production process and the tools and equipment used in the process.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the business unit and how decisions impact customer satisfaction, product quality, on-time delivery and the profitability of the unit.
  • Ability to coordinate a wide variety of resources to meet production quality and quantity metrics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to effectively lead, manage, train and motivate a diverse group of employees to achieve high production levels within tight time deadlines and in a highly dynamic manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to use some or all of the following PC applications: Word, Lotus Notes, Excel, Powerpoint.

Physical Demands
  • Duties of this position are performed in a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to elements such as noise, dust, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, etc.
  • Duties may require periodic sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • Above demands are carried out within the local existing Health and Safety guidelines
