A Production Engineer Manager oversees the engineering and technical aspects of a manufacturing process, ensuring that production runs efficiently, safely, and meets quality standards. They lead and supervise a team of engineers and technicians, coordinate maintenance and improvement projects, and work closely with other departments to optimize production workflows. Their responsibilities also include analyzing production data, troubleshooting issues, and implementing strategies for cost reduction and productivity improvement.

How do Production Engineer Managers typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership and team management responsibilities?

Production Engineer Managers often split their time between overseeing production processes and leading their engineering teams. While they remain involved in solving complex technical challenges and optimizing workflows, a significant portion of their role includes mentoring engineers, coordinating cross-functional projects, and aligning production goals with broader business objectives. Effective managers prioritize regular communication with team members and stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and foster a collaborative environment. Balancing these aspects requires strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate technical tasks while maintaining oversight of critical production metrics.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.

Job Description:

We are seeking a seasoned Product Engineer to own the production release of advanced RF/mmWave Front-End ICs (FEICs) and complementary mixed-signal and digital ASICs for our TeraWave team. Sitting at the intersection of product engineering, test engineering, and validation engineering, you will guide new products from tape-out through qualification, characterization, engineering validation, and high-volume production-directly influencing schedule attainment, yield, and cost structure. You will be the single owner accountable for the silicon release, stepping into every stage of the production flow including qualification, characterization, ATE test development, engineering validation, excursion management, and failure analysis. Your work will contribute to Blue Origin's mission of enabling millions to live and work in space for the betterment of Earth by integrating technology from various product lines to advance space-based communication.

Special Mentions:

  • Relocation provided
  • Travel expected up to 10% of the time
  • Interviews will include a technical assessment
  • This role is based onsite in San Diego, CA; the Bay Area, CA; or Renton, WA. A temporary remote work exception is approved while our Bay Area and San Diego sites are being developed.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Take full ownership of the product release, guiding new FEICs and ASICs from compliance to production while ensuring adherence to rigorous development process.
  • Formulate and execute plans for product characterization, qualification, and ATE testing in line with internal guidelines and JEDEC standards.
  • Drive measurements/data collection and statistical analysis for characterization, qualification, correlation, production test-limit setting, and any other specialized testing for datasheet parameters.
  • Lead engineering validation efforts, correlating bench, ATE, and system-level results to qualify silicon against datasheet and mission requirements.
  • Own failure analysis across the production lifecycle-coordinating with design, OSATs, and labs to root-cause yield, reliability, and field issues and to drive corrective actions.
  • Spearhead cost reductions through yield improvement and test-time optimizations.
  • Review NPI-related hardware designs (load boards, probe cards, characterization and validation boards).
  • Validate production test solutions in partnership with test engineers.
  • Manage excursions, including low-yield events.
  • Operate as a key interface between the development team, external partners, and backend operations and OSATs.
  • Define KPIs, monitor overall product performance, and deliver regular KPI reporting.
  • Continuously identify enhancements to the NPI process, focusing on efficiency and reduction of overhead.
  • Act as a mentor to junior team members, fostering technical and professional growth.
  • Provide semiconductor production expertise on strategic projects that support the broader TeraWave and Blue Origin business.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS or MS and 10+ years of IC product engineering / product development experience, including bringing new products from definition to production release.
