What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Production Engineer Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Production Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and team leadership, typically backed by a degree in engineering and relevant management experience. Familiarity with production management software (like SAP or MES), Lean Six Sigma methodologies, and safety regulations is highly valued, with certifications in project management or Lean often advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to motivate and lead cross-functional teams distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure efficient production operations, drive process improvements, and foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

How do Production Engineer Managers typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership and team management responsibilities?

Production Engineer Managers often split their time between overseeing production processes and leading their engineering teams. While they remain involved in solving complex technical challenges and optimizing workflows, a significant portion of their role includes mentoring engineers, coordinating cross-functional projects, and aligning production goals with broader business objectives. Effective managers prioritize regular communication with team members and stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and foster a collaborative environment. Balancing these aspects requires strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate technical tasks while maintaining oversight of critical production metrics.

They lead and supervise a team of engineers and technicians, coordinate maintenance and improvement projects, and work closely with other departments to optimize production workflows. Their responsibilities also include analyzing production data, troubleshooting issues, and implementing strategies for cost reduction and productivity improvement.

The Role

An established manufacturing organisation is seeking an experienced Production Manager to lead site-based production operations. This role is accountable for driving Safety, Quality, Cost, and Operational performance in line with defined KPIs, while leading and engaging shift-based production teams.

This is a hands-on leadership position within a regulated manufacturing environment, requiring a strong focus on EHS, continuous improvement, and people leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all production activities comply with EHS, security policies, procedures, and standards, minimising operational risk
  • Promote a strong safety-first culture, leading by example and supporting EHS initiatives across the site
  • Build, lead, and develop high-performing, engaged teams, ensuring effective resource allocation
  • Coach, mentor, and develop employees, including succession planning, performance feedback, and annual reviews
  • Deliver production targets on time, to cost and quality standards, with a strong “right-first-time” mindset
  • Prevent customer quality issues; where issues arise, ensure rapid investigation and resolution
  • Investigate non-conformances and embed lessons learned to drive continuous quality improvement
  • Embed a continuous improvement culture, driving efficiencies and best-practice implementation
  • Plan and manage maintenance activities and production downtime to minimise disruption
  • Implement, monitor, and review training and development strategies
  • Undertake additional duties within scope and capability as required

Experience & Qualifications

  • 5–10 years’ experience in manufacturing within a multi-site or unionised environment or 5+ years’ experience in chemical, metals, or heavy manufacturing
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to coach, engage, and develop teams
  • Strong understanding of EHS management principles
  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. Engineering, Metallurgy)
  • Demonstrated experience using problem-solving and root cause analysis (RCA) techniques
  • Experience working within ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards

Reward & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary with performance-related bonus
  • Strong pension / retirement contributions
  • Annual leave entitlement (varies for shift-based environments)
  • Comprehensive benefits supporting financial wellbeing, health, and family life
  • Opportunities for professional growth within a technically driven manufacturing environment

Why Apply?

This role offers the opportunity to:

  • Lead within a safety-critical, high-performance manufacturing operation
  • Make a measurable impact on operational excellence and team development
  • Work in an environment that values accountability, continuous improvement, and inclusion
  • Contribute to solutions that support long-term sustainability and operational resilience
  • Flexible working patterns and job share arrangements may be considered where operationally feasible.
