What does a production art director do?

A Production Art Director oversees the visual aspects of a project, ensuring that all creative materials meet the desired aesthetic and quality standards. They collaborate with designers, artists, and other creative team members to guide the production process, from concept development to final execution. Their role often includes managing timelines, budgets, and resources, as well as ensuring consistency across all visual elements. Production Art Directors are commonly found in advertising, film, publishing, and video game industries.

• Direct photographers, stylists, videographers and freelance creative partners on set.

• Partner with the appropriate production lead to organize productions and ensure seamless execution.

• Maintain the highest creative standards across photography, video and campaign assets.

• Stay agile and strategic on set, identifying additional content opportunities in real time to maximize the value of every shoot.

Design Leadership

• Lead the Graphic Design team.

• Review and provide creative direction across digital, social, email, retail, packaging and marketing assets.

• Prioritize creative work while maintaining an exceptional standard of quality across both seasonal launches and always-on brand initiatives.

• Foster a collaborative, high-performing creative team.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with the Marketing team to bring integrated campaigns to life across every customer touchpoint.

• Collaborate with the Visual Merchandising team to develop creative direction for pop-ups, windows, in-store moments and retail experiences.

• Partner with Product and Packaging teams on branded collateral and packaging that supports product launches.

• Work with the Influencer & Community team to develop gifting concepts, influencer mailers and creator experiences.

• Collaborate across departments to ensure a cohesive brand experience from digital campaigns to physical activations.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in Art Direction or Creative Direction for a consumer-facing brand.

• Exceptional portfolio demonstrating campaign work, photography direction and brand storytelling.

• Strong understanding of photography, styling, typography, color, composition and visual storytelling.

• Experience leading photoshoots from concept through execution.

• Experience managing designers and providing thoughtful creative feedback.

• Excellent creative presentation and communication skills.

• Comfortable collaborating closely with founders and incorporating feedback throughout the creative process.

• Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple creative projects simultaneously while balancing seasonal priorities with long-term brand initiatives.

• The design team is inspired, collaborative and producing exceptional work.

• Cross-functional teams feel aligned around one creative vision.

• Is equally passionate about the big idea and the smallest detail.

• Believes the most memorable brands are built through thoughtful storytelling and consistency across every customer touchpoint.

• Thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where creativity and resourcefulness go hand in hand.
