Job description

Spira Manufacturing is seeking a Machinist Intern to learn fundamental machining operations through supervised experience with CNC and waterjet equipment. The intern will support setup preparation, material handling, inspection, preventive maintenance, 6S, safety improvements, documentation, and other machining tasks as assigned. Machine operation will occur only after required training and under authorized supervision.

This internship runs Tuesday, 09/08/26 - end of December (12-16 weeks) and requires 20-40 hours per week.
Job Accountabilities:
• Complete required safety, PPE, lockout/tagout awareness, and machine-specific training before performing assigned work.
• Observe and assist qualified machinists with CNC and waterjet workflows, including work-order review, material preparation, tooling and fixture setup support, machine checks, and part handling.
• Support deburring, traveler completion, material and tool organization, and dimensional inspection as permitted by training and supervision.
• Assist with supervised cleaning, preventive-maintenance checks, maintenance logs, and department housekeeping.
• Learn and follow approved procedures, safety requirements, quality controls, and authorization limits in the machining area.
• Identify and complete an approved machining safety or 6S improvement with the Safety Team and machining mentors.
• Support assigned machining projects and documentation updates, including procedures, logs, and handoff materials.
• Repeat assigned tasks to improve accuracy, first-pass quality, productivity, and confidence under supervision.
• Deliver a final skills summary and hand off completed procedure, maintenance, and safety documentation.
Job Specifications:
Education: Currently enrolled in high school, college, university, or a relevant career/technical program; coursework or interest in machining, manufacturing, mechanical technology, industrial technology, or a related field is preferred.
Years' Experience: No prior professional experience required. Exposure to machining, manufacturing, shop safety, technical coursework, measurement, or hands-on projects is helpful.
Skills:
• Strong commitment to safety, willingness to follow instructions, and respect for authorization limits.
• Attention to detail when handling materials, reading travelers, using measuring tools, completing logs, and inspecting work.
• Willingness to learn CNC and waterjet equipment, machine procedures, tooling, materials, and production workflows.
• Ability to work respectfully with machinists, maintenance, quality, engineering, safety, and operations partners.
• Reliable organization, housekeeping, follow-through, and ability to complete assigned tasks on schedule.
• Clear communication and willingness to ask questions, report concerns, and accept coaching.
• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and use basic computer, email, spreadsheet, and documentation tools.
