What is a product manager startup?

A Product Manager in a startup is responsible for defining the vision, strategy, and execution of a product while working in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment. They collaborate closely with engineering, design, marketing, and business teams to build and launch products that meet customer needs. Unlike in larger companies, startup PMs often wear multiple hats, from customer research to backlog management and even go-to-market strategy. They must be adaptable, data-driven, and comfortable with ambiguity. Success in this role requires balancing short-term execution with long-term product vision while ensuring alignment with the company’s overall goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product manager startup?

To thrive as a Product Manager at a startup, you need strong product development knowledge, an entrepreneurial mindset, and often a background in business or technology. Familiarity with agile project management tools, wireframing software, analytics platforms, and sometimes certifications such as Scrum or Product Management are valuable assets. Excellent communication, adaptability, leadership, and the ability to manage ambiguity help candidates excel in dynamic startup environments. These skills are crucial for rapidly iterating products, aligning cross-functional teams, and driving early-stage growth in competitive markets.

What are the typical challenges a product manager faces when working at a startup?

Product Managers at startups often face challenges such as prioritizing limited resources, navigating shifting business goals, and working with small, fast-moving teams. You may need to wear multiple hats, balancing product strategy, stakeholder communication, and hands-on execution within tight deadlines. Collaboration is key, as you'll often work closely with founders, engineers, designers, and customer-facing teams to rapidly iterate and validate new features. While the pace can be intense, it also offers a dynamic environment with significant opportunities for impact and career growth.

Job description

Senior Product Manager

Denver, Colorado or Remote (USA)

About Us

Breef is the leading platform for brands to find their next agency. We've streamlined the process from start to finish, making it easy to build better marketing teams with the right agencies.

Breef guarantees your brand will find the right agency in days (not months), on budget, and for your most important projects. We're on a mission to give every brand and agency the opportunity to create great work together.

With over 50,000 brands and agencies, Breef is now the largest agency brand globally.

The Role

Breef is seeking a Senior Product Manager to join our dynamic, fast growing team. This team member will be responsible for leading our product roadmap and implementing key product initiatives for tens of thousands of brand and agency users.

As the Senior Product Manager, you will partner closely with our leadership, product and engineering teams to plan, execute, and deliver on a robust product roadmap. You will be expected to blend strategic planning and tactical execution skills to support Breef's overall product strategy, while working 'in the weeds' on individual product initiatives. There is significant opportunity for ownership and growth in this role.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Collaborate with leadership, product, and engineering teams to define and deliver Breef's product strategy and roadmap, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Product Development: Drive the execution of the product roadmap, managing the entire product lifecycle from ideation to launch, while maintaining a high standard of quality and user experience.
  • Feature Refinement: Ensure features and updates are fully thought through by diving deep into UX details and turning initial concepts into polished, user-friendly solutions.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with internal teams, including product designers, to translate company objectives and user insights into actionable requirements and structured design/development sprints.
  • Data-Driven Innovation: Leverage data and user insights to generate new ideas, refine existing features, and ensure Breef remains a leader in high-value outsourced work.
  • Workflow Optimization: Streamline product documentation, workflows, and feedback loops across product, design, and engineering teams to maximize efficiency.
  • Performance Tracking: Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and OKRs, and track ongoing performance to measure success and inform future improvements.
  • User & Market Expertise: Develop a deep understanding of the Breef user and competitive landscape, identifying areas of value and opportunities to further win the market.
  • Feedback Management: Refine processes for gathering, prioritizing, and communicating user feedback internally and externally, ensuring timely delivery of features and effective product launches.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with leadership and stakeholders to align product efforts with broader business goals and represent the product team within the organization.
What You’ll Bring
  • At least 4-6+ years of product management experience for a B2B marketplace / SaaS business or a financial technology organization.
  • Proven experience in a marketing or technology-driven startup environment.
  • Ability to dive deep into the details and actively participate in hands‑on design and development of the product.
  • Proven understanding of Agile values and principles, such as SCRUM, Kanban or SAFe.
  • Comprehensive experience with workflow management tools such as Jira and Asana.
  • Experience with Figma design and prototyping tools.
  • Clear understanding and ability to explain the business opportunity and technical decisions behind your product portfolio.
  • Understanding of, and experience with, modern and remote workplace tools (Jira, Google Suite, calendar booking tools, Slack, email workflow systems, etc.).
Who You Are
  • A problem solver with creativity and a deep curiosity to change the future of work and the workflow of brands and agencies.
  • Competitive, using data to solve problems, identify opportunities — you are capable of inventing and using new metrics in order to learn and make decisions.
  • A self‑starter. You make good decisions with incomplete data and are constantly optimizing for learning.
  • Accountable and constantly looking for opportunities for improvement. You don't accept "because that is the way we've always done it."
  • Excited to roll up your sleeves and be part of a collaborative startup team.
Benefits
  • Salary range between $110K‑$150K (depending on experience)
  • Opportunity for extreme growth and ownership within the organization
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Equity in a fast‑growth startup
  • Generous vacation policy

The Breef HQ is located in Denver, Colorado. We are open to Denver‑based candidates or remote candidates — if the right fit.
