Compensation
The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is $134,100.00 - $223,500.00 for a Chicago based position. This role is eligible for an incentive target of up to 15%, based on the achievement of individual and company performance objectives in accordance with the current terms of the incentive program which are subject to change.

Position Details
We are seeking a skilled and passionate Engineering Manager to join our Customer Information Management (CIM) team. The team owns the enterprise address platform. Our mission is to deliver a trusted, centralized set of address services that standardize, validate, and serve address data through scalable, API-first solutions. This leader encourages teamwork, works well with senior leadership, and has a clear vision of what determines a successful solution for the team, the customer, and our company.
As a Software Engineering Manager at Grainger, you would partner with ProductManagement, Architects, Designers and Engineers to lead teams in the end-to-end execution of project work and would help determine and promote modern software engineering practices. Other partner teams you would collaborate closely with, are our security and SRE teams to ensure our applications are secure, resilient and scalable. As the central hub for bringing customer information together, various engineering teams rely on the data your services provide. You would also help provide guidance at all stages of the development life cycle to help ensure the highest quality outcomes, completed on time, and delivered on budget.
This position reports to the Senior Manager, CIM, Product Engineering.
Location
This role is a hybrid role located at Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago, 2 days per week. We will also consider candidates who are seeking relocation to Chicago and provide partial relocation assistance.

You Will
  • Provide guidance and leadership to Software Engineers, helping define their roles and responsibilities
  • Support team members in developing and following personal development plans aligned with career growth objectives.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers to align on product roadmaps and translate requirements into actionable strategies.
  • Promote continuous improvement in software development processes and workflows.
  • Mentor Software and Quality Engineers to support technical and professional development.
  • Act as a key partner to product and downstream engineering teams that consume address APIs.
  • Ensure adherence to established development standards, coding practices, and quality assurance processes.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery and reliability of addresses, validation, and enrichment of addresses.
  • Ensure healthy team operations, including sustainable delivery, on-call practices, and incident response.
  • Monitor all the development, testing activities, deployment activities, code quality, and customer satisfaction with teams consuming our API's
  • Track and analyze metrics to monitor team effectiveness and quality outcomes.
  • Identify process inefficiencies or quality issues and implement improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as a point of contact for escalation related to the team's projects and deliverables.

You Have
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field required
  • 5+ years experience in Software Engineering
  • 2+ years experience leading developers
  • Ability to manage Agile sprint teams, vendor relationships, on-shore/off-shore teams
  • Technical Knowledge in:
    • Java & J2EE stack with basic Java frameworks (Spring, Hibernate, Spring Boot)
    • CI/CD, automated testing, automated monitoring.
    • Containerization platform (Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift)
    • Cloud stack (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure)
    • Software security and basic vulnerabilities
    • Micro-services architecture
    • Event-streaming technologies (Kafka)
    • Familiarity with additional programming languages (Kotlin, Python)

Preferred:
  • Web application front-end frameworks (NextJS, Angular)
