What does a product development process engineer do?

A Product Development Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the processes involved in developing new products from concept to production. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure products are developed efficiently, cost-effectively, and according to quality standards. Their role often includes analyzing workflows, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing best practices to streamline the product development lifecycle.

How does a product development process engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during new product launches?

Product Development Process Engineers play a vital role in bridging the gap between design, manufacturing, and quality teams during new product launches. They work closely with R&D, production, and supply chain teams to ensure that product designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet quality standards. This involves participating in design reviews, coordinating prototype builds, troubleshooting process issues, and implementing feedback from various stakeholders. Effective communication and project management skills are crucial, as these engineers often lead meetings and facilitate alignment across departments to keep the project on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Process Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, product lifecycle management, and process optimization, often backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, statistical analysis tools, and methodologies like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing is typically required. While ensuring the product meets all customer requirements, process engineers work to improve quality, reduce cost, and increase productivity. This is done by utilizing data to prioritize issues, implement solutions, and maintain process control.
Process engineers are familiar with all manufacturing operations and gain a deep understanding as they become more experienced. They have a higher degree of self-sufficiency than junior process engineers yet are still to learn from and support senior process engineers.
WORKING PROCEDURES:
  • Identify, document, and resolve safety concerns
  • Support projects, initiatives, and continuous improvement activities that eliminate waste and improves safety, quality, and productivity
  • Assist in the development, improvement, and standardization of production processes
  • Assist in the qualification of new processes and equipment
  • Develop training material and implement/oversee process-related training of operators
  • Document and implement process changes through the ECN system
  • Serve as the next level of engineering response to production issues, after junior-level escalation or absence
  • Advise on the deposition of non-conforming material and root-cause analysis
  • Lead small to mid-scale yield, equipment, and qualification projects

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
  • Frequent contact with other engineers, technicians, and operators.

DIRECTION OF OTHERS:
  • Frequently direct junior process engineers, technicians, operators, or maintenance personnel with the assistance of SWR's, ECN/TDCN's, and/or maintenance work requests.
  • May supervise technicians on matters regarding process control and improvement.
  • May supervise interns or co-op students.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BS in relevant engineering field required.
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities in all responsibilities required of junior process engineers.
