Product Development Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Development Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, product design, and project management, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering fields. Proficiency with CAD software, prototyping tools, and familiarity with industry standards or certifications such as Six Sigma are highly valuable. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and drive innovation. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing high-quality products that meet market needs, technical specifications, and project timelines.

How does a Product Development Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product lifecycle?

Product Development Engineers frequently work alongside teams such as design, manufacturing, marketing, and quality assurance to bring new products from concept to launch. Collaboration often involves participating in regular meetings, sharing technical insights, and ensuring that design specifications align with manufacturability and market requirements. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are vital, as the role requires balancing diverse inputs and troubleshooting issues that arise in each development phase. This collaborative environment ensures that products meet both technical standards and customer expectations.

What is Product Development Engineering?

Product Development Engineering is a field focused on designing, developing, and bringing new products to market. It involves a combination of engineering principles, creativity, and project management to turn ideas into viable products. Product Development Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and marketing, to ensure that products meet customer needs and quality standards. Their work often includes prototyping, testing, and refining products throughout the development cycle.

What is the difference between Product Development Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectProduct Development EngineeringMechanical Engineering

Prysmian Group is the world leader in energy and telecom cable systems, with 30,000 employees across 50+ countries. Our Product Development teams are at the center of innovation-designing, improving, and qualifying the cable technologies that power energy grids, telecommunications networks, infrastructure, and industrial applications.

We are hiring Product Development Engineers across multiple U.S. locations. These roles are ideal for engineers who enjoy blending handson technical work with crossfunctional collaboration. You'll partner with R&D, manufacturing, quality, and commercial teams to design new products, improve existing ones, support plant trials, and ensure our solutions meet performance, cost, and market requirements.

Role Responsibilities
  • Design and develop new cable products, components, and materials to meet performance, cost, and regulatory requirements.

  • Support full product development cycles, including concept creation, design calculations, prototype builds, qualification plans, and testing.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to support plant trials, troubleshoot issues, and optimize product/process performance.

  • Analyze test data, evaluate product performance, and prepare technical documentation such as specifications, drawings, and qualification reports.

  • Partner with product management and commercial teams to identify market needs, evaluate customer requirements, and support new product introductions.

  • Participate in costreduction initiatives, designtocost activities, and continuous improvement projects.

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (UL, CSA, ICEA, IEEE, etc.) and support certification activities.

  • Work crossfunctionally with R&D, quality, operations, and materials engineering to drive product improvements and resolve technical challenges.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Chemical, or related field).

  • Handson experience in product development, design, testing, or manufacturing engineering.

  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with the ability to interpret technical data.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams.

  • Clear communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in cable, wire, polymers, or industrial manufacturing.

  • Familiarity with industry standards (UL, CSA, ICEA, IEEE) or product certification processes.

  • Experience supporting plant trials, process troubleshooting, or designtocost initiatives.

  • Background in materials, extrusion, compounding, or mechanical performance testing.

  • Experience with CAD tools, statistical analysis, or design of experiments (DOE).
