The Mechatronics, Mirrors and Lighting group specializes in automotive technologies that are driving the future of mobility. Job Responsibilities:

Oversee the development of concepts through production, ensuring robust and cost-effective design solutions. Responsibilities include serving as the main design point of contact throughout the Product Development Cycle, collaborating closely with Product Engineers to meet customer requirements, and focusing on Proof of Concept planning to mitigate design risks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop concepts through to production, to ensure robust, cost sensitive design solutions

  • Provide the main design resource or point of contact for a Product during the Product Development Cycle through to Production Manufacturing

  • Work closely with the Product Engineer to develop and implement solid design concepts to meet the requirements defined in customer contract

  • Focus on the Proof of Concept planning with the Product Engineer, to understand and limit the risk of design solutions with respect to part performance and manufacturability

  • Perform complex vehicle level packaging studies, balancing physical space limitations, legal functional requirements, and manufacturing limitations

  • Ensure the CAD deliverables are progressing along the expected timeline, and propose action plans should problems arise

  • Define CAD files which communicate design intent from a singular component to a multi-component assembly

  • Create and define robust, computer aided design files, consistent with Autosystems Standards, capable of enduring multiple design revisions quickly and efficiently

  • Maintain and revise our design responsible, computer aided design files within our Customer's data management system

  • Support data translation at the request of our Supply base to facilitate tool builds and concurrent design activity in CAD packages, other than that used by Autosystems

  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Control as a main point of contact for design and geometric related issues

  • Determine and communicate dimensional measurement plans to ensure molded parts meet design intent.

  • Work with Purchasing to help source new purchased components and collect the related engineering documentation

  • Provide CAD models/drawings and proof of concept activity to facilitate VA/VE initiatives

  • Peer mentor the designers assigned to their respective programs, helping them to develop their skills sets and experience

  • Create and maintain design standard parts library best practices gained from current experience

  • Maintain and update design checklist

  • Reference corporate RASIC charts for specific details on program responsibilities and authorities.

  • Understands and follows existing policies, procedures, work instructions and standards and makes recommendations for continuous improvement.

  • Follows all applicable Health and Safety processes and policies

  • Follows Magna's Code of Conduct & Ethics and related compliance policies

  • Perform other duties as required.

Education / Experience:

  • Two or three years post-secondary school (university or Community college) (Engineering Field) or Associates in CAD

Special Knowledge / Skills:

  • Solid control of Parametric Free Form Surface and Solid modeling in 1-2 CAD packages such as Unigraphics/NX, IDEAS or Catia

  • Understands and applies standard plastics geometries to ensure manufacturing controls (ie: Draft, Wall stock, Rads and Fillets) are incorporated

  • Can manage data transfers as required by our customer, utilizing the systems prescribed as trained/ presented.

  • Perform translation of data utilizing industry standard translation software as required.

  • Effective communication (written and verbal) with the customer, suppliers, and various departments within Autosystems.

  • Ability to communicate with and manage international Design team members.

  • Organization of records, time, priority setting, deadlines.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of metrology, material properties and manufacturing processes and limitations.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Standard Drafting Practices and the ability to define and interpret the principles of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

  • Comprehensive understanding of Autosystems manufacturing processes and techniques, such as Injection Molding, Coating systems, and Assembly techniques currently in use.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of BOM assemblies, extensions, LED lamps, A Surfacing, and reflectors and front-end modules.

  • Experience with CAD consulting and CAE.

  • Mathematical Skills: Aptitude for working with numbers with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Reasoning Ability: Effective trouble shooting for a variety of different situations/issues effectively
