What Are the Qualifications to Get a Job in Product Design?

The qualifications to get a job in product design depend on your specific responsibilities and position. Prototype designers and drafters typically need a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related subject, although some drafters can begin with an associate degree or specialist knowledge of AutoCAD. Production designers may need experience or a bachelor’s degree in materials science, such as chemistry or chemical engineering, which helps them choose the appropriate materials for a product. Important skills include strong technical ability and interpersonal communication.

How do product designers typically collaborate with engineers and product managers during the development process?

Product designers work closely with engineers and product managers throughout the product development cycle. Early on, designers participate in brainstorming sessions and user research to define product requirements alongside product managers. As concepts are developed, designers create wireframes and prototypes, sharing them with engineers to ensure technical feasibility and alignment with business goals. Regular feedback loops, design reviews, and cross-functional meetings are common, allowing designers to refine their work based on input from both technical and strategic perspectives. This collaborative approach helps ensure the end product is user-centered, technically sound, and aligned with company objectives.

What is the difference between Product Design vs UX Design?

While both roles overlap, Product Designers often handle a wider range of responsibilities, integrating business goals with user needs, whereas UX Designers concentrate on optimizing usability and interaction.

What is product design?

Product design is the process of identifying market opportunities, defining problems, and developing innovative solutions in the form of physical or digital products. It involves understanding user needs, creating prototypes, and working closely with engineering, marketing, and manufacturing teams to bring ideas to life. Product designers combine creativity, technical skills, and user-centered thinking to ensure that products are both functional and visually appealing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Designer, you need proficiency in user-centered design, prototyping, and visual communication, often backed by a degree in design or related experience. Familiarity with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite and experience with user research and testing platforms are typical requirements. Strong collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills help product designers translate user needs into effective solutions within cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that products are both aesthetically pleasing and functional, meeting user expectations and business goals.

Ready to join a mission that matters? The future of cybersecurity starts with you.

About the Role:

As a Product Design Manager, you'll ensure exceptional design outcomes while building strong cross-disciplinary partnerships and supporting your team's capacity planning, wellness, and professional growth. By evolving team practices, you'll amplify impact while cultivating excellence through critiques and thoughtful guidance.

You'll partner closely with other managers to coordinate cross-product group collaborations and to help grow the design practice at CrowdStrike.

As a part of a global Product Design team, you'll also engage deeply with product managers, and the engineering team to deliver the best possible experience.

About CrowdStrike Design:

At CrowdStrike, product design is a partner with product management and engineering leads. This means design owns the user experience solution for any project. We look for full stack designers and managers who can bring leadership from the conception phase through the final rollout. Having strong team leaders to guide and support the design teams through the process is key to success. Design at CrowdStrike drives innovation, inspiration, and the future of the product. Craftsmanship, attention to detail, flexibility, and love for great products binds us together as a team.

What You'll Do:
  • Lead a team of distributed team designers, inspiring them to deliver world-class user interfaces for products in our platform.

  • Partner with peers in design, engineering, and product management to prioritize, track, triage, organize roadmap priorities, and manage team allocation accordingly.

  • Communicate and socialize design objectives and principles to the broader team.

  • Mentor and coach designers within and outside your squad to foster accountability, elevate design craft, and grow their professional careers.

  • Optimize team processes and structures to enhance strategic influence, handoff quality, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Foster design excellence through consistent design reviews, constructive feedback, and cohesive solution development.

  • Develop knowledge of all CrowdStrike products and services to identify areas of overlap and collaboration.

  • Expertise in end-to-end design workflows and deliverables to effectively coach and guide designers at every phase of work.

What You'll Need:
  • Strong leadership skills working with designers, PM/Eng partners, and other managers.

  • Servant leadership, fostering teamwork.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal).

  • Hands-on enterprise B2B SaaS product design expertise.

  • Flexible context-switcher (people/resourcing for multiple projects).

  • Self-driven, growth-oriented, open to feedback.

  • Data-driven decision-making.

  • Ability to create alignment among stakeholders.

  • Growth-mindset.

  • Outstanding collaboration in a fast-paced, highly distributed environment.

  • At least 3 years of people management experience.

  • Online portfolio.

  • Ability to work from our Arlington VA. Austin TX. or New York NY. offices 2+ days per week.

Bonus Points:
  • Experience in platform level design.

  • Experience in product design for Cloud infrastructure, ERP, or other data-heavy SaaS product areas.

  • Knowledge of the cybersecurity industry.
