What is a product design internship?

A Product Design Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in designing products, often within a company’s design team. Interns typically assist with tasks such as creating prototypes, conducting user research, collaborating with engineers, and developing design solutions for real-world problems. This role provides valuable exposure to the product development process and helps interns build a portfolio of work, network with professionals, and develop practical skills essential for a career in product design.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a product design internship?

As a Product Design Intern, you’ll typically work on a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and collaborating with cross-functional teams like engineering and marketing. You may also participate in design reviews, help refine design systems, and contribute to brainstorming sessions that shape product features. Interns often get exposure to the full product development cycle, which provides a great learning environment and opportunities to build a strong portfolio. The experience can be fast-paced but is highly collaborative, giving you insight into both the creative and practical aspects of product design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, user experience (UX), and proficiency in design tools like Sketch, Figma, or Adobe Creative Suite, often supported by coursework or a portfolio. Familiarity with prototyping software, wireframing tools, and basic knowledge of front-end development can be advantageous. Strong communication, collaboration, and a willingness to accept feedback are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are important because they enable you to contribute effectively to design projects, iterate on concepts, and work well within multidisciplinary teams to create user-centered products.
