A Product Design Engineer Intern assists in the development and improvement of products by working closely with engineering and design teams. Their responsibilities often include creating prototypes, conducting tests, analyzing data, and using CAD software to design components. Interns gain hands-on experience in the product development cycle, from concept to production. They also collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet both technical requirements and user needs.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a product design engineer internship?

As a Product Design Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on real-world projects such as prototyping new product concepts, conducting design validation tests, and creating technical drawings using CAD software. You may collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and manufacturing teams to refine designs and ensure they meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. Interns are often involved in brainstorming sessions, user research, and iterative design reviews, providing valuable exposure to the entire product development cycle. This hands-on experience helps you develop both technical and teamwork skills, laying a strong foundation for a future career in product design engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product design engineer intern, and why are they important?

Job description

Description
Applications Engineer
GEOTEK / PUPI® - Stewartville, MN (on-site)
GEOTEK makes PUPI®, the world's leading fiberglass crossarm, along with a growing line of engineered composite products for infrastructure. We're the manufacturer and we hold the patents on much of what we build. When a customer's engineer has a hard technical question, the answer comes from our engineering team.
We're hiring an Applications Engineer to be part of that.
The work
  • Work directly with customers to understand what they're building and translate it into a design that works
  • Perform the structural and load calculations behind it
  • Interpret test data from our lab and make the design call
  • Lead or contribute to new product development. We're actively adding product lines
  • Produce engineering drawings, BOMs, and reports
  • Present designs and proposals to customers. Travel up to 10%
  • Work with sales and operations so what we quote is what we ship

What we're looking for
  • BS in Engineering
  • 3+ years as an applications, sales, product, or design engineer at a manufacturer
  • Experience in technical conversations with customers' engineers
  • SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD

You don't need to know crossarms, composites, or NESC walking in. We'll teach the utility side. We're looking for an engineer who picks up a technical domain quickly, has strong communication skills, and is passionate about their product.
The compensation range for this position is $74,386 - $102,280 annually. Final offers may vary based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The posted range represents the expected earning potential for this position within the current organizational budget and market conditions.
Who We Are
For over 30 years, GEOTEK has been internationally recognized for industry leading composite technologies, engineering, and service. The company has grown PUPI® into the leading global provider of fiberglass crossarms and is committed to adding and developing other market-leading composite brands for the world's infrastructure. The company was founded in 1990 to manufacture and market Common Sense Fencing and other pultruded fiberglass products. Early on GEOTEK also began producing utility composite crossarms for Pultruded Utility Products, Inc., a company it acquired in 2000 and renamed Pultruded Utility Products International (PUPI) to reflect the global opportunity for these products. PUPI (pronounced "puppy") is a brand of GEOTEK. Using proprietary processes and several patented inventions, GEOTEK manufactures and distributes engineered fiberglass composites that are used by the transmission and distribution power lines and substations. The company is well positioned for sustained growth and profitability through market expansion and new product offerings.
Our Purpose
As the global leader in composite crossarms, we aim to broaden our engineered composite products in infrastructure applications with light poles and beyond.
Mission
Enhance the world's infrastructure with engineered composite products.
Vision
Develop, acquire, and grow respected composite product brands; where each product line delivers market-leading reliability, performance, and value to global infrastructure customers.
TRUE Values
  • TEAM -we before me
  • RELIABLE -every day in every way
  • URGENT -the drive to do
  • ENTERPRISING -be curious

Benefits
  • Health, Dental, Ancillary Benefits
  • Generous PTO and 9 paid holidays
  • 401k with 4% company match
  • HSA employer contribution
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Profit Sharing
