The Product Design Engineer Internship focuses on developing and refining product designs, often involving CAD modeling, prototyping, and user-centered design. In contrast, the Mechanical Engineering Intern typically emphasizes mechanical systems, analysis, and manufacturing processes. Both roles require engineering fundamentals but differ in their specific focus areas and work environments.

What does a Product Design Engineer Intern do?

A Product Design Engineer Intern assists in the development and improvement of products by working closely with engineering and design teams. Their responsibilities often include creating prototypes, conducting tests, analyzing data, and using CAD software to design components. Interns gain hands-on experience in the product development cycle, from concept to production. They also collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet both technical requirements and user needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Design Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Design Engineer Intern, you generally need a solid background in engineering principles, CAD modeling, and problem-solving, typically supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, as well as prototyping tools and basic knowledge of manufacturing processes, is expected. Strong teamwork, creativity, and effective communication skills help interns contribute innovative ideas and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are essential for developing viable product solutions and gaining valuable hands-on experience in real-world design projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a Product Design Engineer Internship?

As a Product Design Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on real-world projects such as prototyping new product concepts, conducting design validation tests, and creating technical drawings using CAD software. You may collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and manufacturing teams to refine designs and ensure they meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. Interns are often involved in brainstorming sessions, user research, and iterative design reviews, providing valuable exposure to the entire product development cycle. This hands-on experience helps you develop both technical and teamwork skills, laying a strong foundation for a future career in product design engineering.

Job description

Description
About the Role
GEOTEK is looking for a Design Engineer to join a team that builds composite structural products used in power infrastructure around the world. The work spans the full product lifecycle - concept, prototyping, testing, validation, and production support - and touches nearly every part of the business.
This role is well-suited for someone who's sharp, takes ownership, and wants to see their work in the field. You'll collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, operations, and customers, so the ability to communicate clearly and build relationships across teams is something we value highly.
What You'll Do
  • Design and develop high-performance pultruded fiberglass structural products, including overhead power line systems and composite poles
  • Create and maintain 3D models, assemblies, and drawings using SolidWorks
  • Prepare engineering drawings with GD&T per ANSI Y14.5
  • Set up and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering data in the ERP system
  • Manage revision control and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to support robust designs
  • Apply FEA principles to support design decisions and validation
  • Design, set up, and execute mechanical testing of systems and components
  • Support new product development efforts, including quotes, prototypes, and production ramp
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, operations, and external customers on product performance and technical questions
  • Build working knowledge of the electrical power distribution and transmission industry
  • Collaborate across teams and spend time on the manufacturing floor as needed

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, or Composites preferred)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - you'll be working with internal teams and external customers regularly
  • Self-motivated and comfortable managing multiple priorities
  • Some exposure to FEA and familiarity with the new product development process
  • Experience with SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, and drawings)
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (formal training is a plus)
  • Attention to detail and ability to stay organized across multiple projects
  • Comfortable working in both office and manufacturing environments
  • Internship or early-career experience in product development is a strong plus

The compensation range for this position is $66,265 - $103,500 annually. Final offers may vary based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The posted range represents the expected earning potential for this position within the current organizational budget and market conditions.
