Job description

The Production Assistant is responsible for learning Computer Graphics and Audio, for the purposes of filling in on either position. They are also responsible for moving and arranging set pieces, assisting guests, directing talent, and other studio-related duties.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Trains on, and is able to competently run, the Xpression graphics program, as well as production audio, during live news broadcasts.
  • Fills in for sick or vacationing coworkers in these two positions when needed.
  • Directs talent from the studio floor when available, including guiding them to the correct shot, and giving them visual time cues.
  • Communicates with Production crew and News talent during broadcasts.
  • Adds and removes set pieces between segments of live broadcasts.
  • Maintains studio cleanliness, including vacuuming and wiping down sets.
  • Assists guests with microphones, equipment, product displays, and other tasks related to appearing on-air.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Requirements and Skills:

  • Technical degree in Digital Electronics, Broadcasting, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Flexible schedule, including weekends.
  • Basic knowledge of the workings of a television studio, as it pertains to live broadcasting of news and lifestyle programs.
  • Basic proficiency with computers.
  • Basic knowledge of Photoshop preferred.
  • Experience with broadcast-related equipment preferred.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Schedule and Compensation:
  • This position will, on average, require 20 hours or less a week, mostly on weekday mornings. However, as a fill-in position, the Production Assistant may be called upon to work some weekend evenings as well, often at short notice. The pay for this position starts at $15.00/hr.

  • Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • The Production Assistant must be able to stand and sit for long periods of time, reach, climb, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, the Production Assistant must be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions. Must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
