What is a produce manager?

Produce Managers are responsible for overseeing the produce section of a grocery store or supermarket. They manage inventory, ensure the freshness and quality of fruits and vegetables, supervise staff, and create attractive product displays. Produce Managers also handle ordering, pricing, and maintaining food safety standards. Their goal is to maximize sales while providing customers with high-quality, fresh produce.

What does a produce manager do?

As a produce manager, your responsibilities center on the operations of the produce department within a grocery store. You manage staff, promote sales, and ensure company standards of quality and customer service. As part of your duties, you may create displays to boost sales of fruits and vegetables, manage and track inventory levels, and collaborate with other department leaders. You check inventory quality, purchase bulk produce based on customer demand, and provide pricing guidelines to employees. Produce managers also help keep the store clean, speak directly with customers, and train staff in customer relations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a produce manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Produce Manager, you need expertise in inventory management, product quality assessment, and merchandising, often supported by prior retail or grocery experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, ordering software, and food safety certifications is commonly required. Strong organizational skills, leadership, and effective communication make someone excel in this role. These skills ensure the produce section runs efficiently, meets safety standards, and provides customers with fresh, appealing products.

What are some common challenges a produce manager faces when maintaining product quality and freshness?

Produce Managers often encounter challenges such as fluctuating temperatures, inconsistent deliveries, and high product turnover, which can all impact the quality and freshness of fruits and vegetables. Staying vigilant with proper storage, rotation, and regular inspections is essential to minimize spoilage and waste. Additionally, managing inventory levels and responding quickly to changes in customer demand are vital to ensure the department consistently offers fresh products while reducing losses.

What is the difference between Produce Manager vs Grocery Clerk?

Being a produce manager involves overseeing daily operations of the produce department, managing inventory, and ensuring product quality, which can be physically demanding and require strong organizational skills. The role often requires early mornings, attention to detail, and knowledge of fresh produce, but it generally does not involve complex technical skills. Success depends on experience, teamwork, and the ability to handle customer service situations.

Job description

ASSISTANT PRODUCE MANAGER

Rosewood Market + Deli | Columbia, SC | Full-Time

$18.00 / hour to start

At Rosewood Market, our produce department isn't an afterthought, it's one of the first things our customers see, touch, and trust when they walk through our doors. Every crate we receive, every display we build, and every item we put on the floor is a direct reflection of who we are as a market. We take that seriously.

We're looking for an Assistant Produce Manager who shares that pride. Someone who knows their way around a produce department, understands what quality really looks like, and is ready to step into a leadership role and own it. If you're the kind of person who notices when a display is off before anyone else does and fixes it without being asked, keep reading.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Support the Produce Manager in the overall performance, efficiency, and day-to-day operations of the department

Help lead and develop the produce team, setting a high standard for quality, presentation, and accountability

Oversee product receiving; inspect incoming deliveries, verify quality, and flag any discrepancies

Manage back stock, ensuring product is properly stored, rotated, and accessible

Monitor the floor throughout the day; culling, restocking, and maintaining displays to Rosewood standards

Assist with ordering and inventory management to minimize shrink and keep the department well stocked

Ensure all product is properly priced, signed, and merchandised

Uphold strict food safety, sanitation, and handling standards at all times

Step up in the absence of the Produce Manager and keep the department running smoothly

Communicate through company-designated platforms including Homebase and email

Treat customers and co-workers with courtesy, respect, and genuine care

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

2+ years of experience in produce, perishables, or a related grocery/retail environment preferred

A sharp eye for quality, you know what fresh looks like and you don't compromise on it

Prior supervisory or lead experience preferred

Experience with ordering, receiving, and inventory management a plus

Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities at once

Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and comfortable working in cold environments

A genuine passion for fresh, natural, and thoughtfully sourced food

Dependable, punctual, and ready to work (including weekends, if needed)

A team-first attitude with the initiative to lead when it counts

WHAT YOU GET:

$18.00 per hour to start, opportunities for growth

Paid Time Off

Company Vision and Dental Plans with affordable premiums

25% - 50% RWM employee discount

No overnight shifts, we close by 8pm (M-Sat. and 6pm Sundays)

A tight-knit team where your contributions are seen and valued

Real room to grow, most of our leads and managers started on the floor

The chance to be part of something that matters: a local, independent market rooted in community and quality since 1972
