About the Role

The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in planning, directing, and managing the operations and performance of the produce department. This role helps lead and train the team, ensures freshness and quality of products, and provides outstanding customer service while following Vallarta’s standards for food safety, merchandising, and workplace safety.

What You’ll Do

  • Customer Service: Smile, greet, and assist customers and team members with courtesy and respect.

  • Leadership & Supervision: Delegate and managing personnel regarding tasks, schedules, safety, and customer service. Ensure rest and meal breaks are taken.

  • Team Development: Supervise, train, and mentor employees; observe and recognize strong performance; and recommend team members for promotion.

  • Operations: Assist in writing schedules, ordering merchandise, controlling inventory, and reviewing invoices and transfers.

  • Merchandising: Help implement merchandising plans, maintain space management, and ensure displays are well stocked, clean, and attractive.

  • Compliance & Safety: Enforce Vallarta’s Safety Program, correct unsafe acts, and ensure food safety and sanitation standards are met.

  • Auditing: Audit pricing, codes, and product received; ensure signage and price integrity.

  • Sanitation: Clean and maintain displays, shelving, and work areas.

  • Other Duties: Conduct walk-throughs with Produce Manager, attend meetings, and complete additional tasks as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand and walk for long periods (6–8 hours/day).

  • Frequently bend, squat, twist, kneel, and reach above/below shoulders.

  • Frequent use of hands for simple grasping, power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.

  • Lift and carry up to 25 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally (e.g., potatoes, beans).

  • Heaviest item carried: 50 lbs.; longest distance: 5 feet.

  • Operate cars, trucks, forklifts, and other moving equipment.

  • Work near equipment and machinery with exposure to dust, gas, fumes, and noise.

  • Work in refrigerated coolers and around humidity for short periods.

  • 5+ years of produce experience.

  • Knowledge of produce types, vendors, and equipment.

  • Ability to supervise, train, and mentor employees in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong math and problem-solving skills.

  • Must successfully pass food safety certification every 3 years.

  • Strong communication skills and positive, professional attitude.

  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.

  • Must be able to transfer to other store locations within a reasonable commute.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
