Job description

Precision Iron Works is looking for a motivated, organized, and dependable Purchasing Assistant / Procurement Coordinator to join our team.

This is not just a data-entry position. We are looking for someone who wants to learn purchasing, understand the steel industry, take ownership of their responsibilities, and grow within the company.

Our Purchasing Department works directly with estimating, project management, fabrication, receiving, and our vendors to keep material moving. It is a fast-paced environment where availability, pricing, lead times, and project priorities can change daily.

The right person will be detail-oriented, comfortable juggling multiple priorities, and willing to pick up the phone, follow up with vendors, solve problems, and keep things moving.

Previous structural steel experience is a huge plus, but we are willing to train the right person who has the drive and ability to learn.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll work directly with the Purchasing Manager and assist with purchasing and material coordination throughout the company, including:

  • Preparing material bid packages and sending RFQs to vendors for upcoming estimates
  • Obtaining and comparing material pricing, availability, lead times, and freight
  • Assisting with purchasing structural steel and miscellaneous materials for active projects
  • Creating, processing, and maintaining purchase orders
  • Tracking material due dates and following up with vendors to make sure deliveries stay on schedule
  • Communicating material delays, availability issues, substitutions, and other concerns
  • Working with the shop and receiving staff to verify deliveries against purchase orders and resolve discrepancies
  • Maintaining purchasing and procurement records
  • Collecting and maintaining Mill Test Reports (MTRs), material certifications, receiving documents, and related records
  • Updating material unit pricing based on current vendor quotes and market information
  • Monitoring steel pricing, availability, mill lead times, and market conditions
  • Maintaining Shop Orders and handling material requirements for quick-turn projects
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with vendors
  • Researching new vendors and sourcing opportunities to improve pricing, availability, and service
  • Assisting with vendor evaluations, Vendor Surveys, and NCRs
  • Maintaining purchasing records and processes required under our AISC quality program
  • Supporting the Estimating and Project Management teams with material pricing and availability
  • Data entry and general purchasing support as needed

Who We're Looking For

We need someone who is:

  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Self-motivated and willing to take initiative
  • Comfortable working independently without needing constant direction
  • Able to work as part of a team and communicate with multiple departments
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines at the same time
  • Persistent about following up and getting answers
  • Comfortable communicating with vendors by phone and email
  • A problem solver who can gather information, compare options, and make good decisions
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Accurate and efficient with data entry
  • Interested in learning structural steel materials, terminology, specifications, and purchasing
  • Looking for a position where they can learn, grow, and take on additional responsibility

Experience We'd Love to See

Experience in any of the following is a plus:

  • Purchasing or procurement
  • Structural steel
  • Steel fabrication
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Material coordination
  • Estimating support
  • Inventory or receiving
  • Vendor management

Why This Position?

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants more than just another administrative job.

You will learn the purchasing side of the structural steel industry, develop relationships with suppliers, learn how to read material requirements, understand steel pricing and market conditions, and become an important part of keeping our projects moving.

There is real opportunity for advancement for the right person. We are looking for someone who can start by supporting the Purchasing Manager and grow into handling more purchasing responsibilities independently as their knowledge and experience develop.
