Operations Manager (Steel Processing Plant)

Operations Manager - Flat Rolled Steel Processing

A well-established metals processing organization is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to lead a high-volume flat rolled steel processing facility.

The Operations Manager will have full responsibility for plant performance, leading a team of 5 direct-report supervisors/managers and an organization of approximately 50-60 employees. This individual will drive operational excellence across safety, quality, productivity, efficiency, maintenance, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for all plant operations.
  • Lead and develop a team of five supervisors/managers across production, maintenance, shipping/receiving, logistics, and related functions.
  • Manage a workforce of approximately 50-60 employees through frontline leadership.
  • Ensure a strong safety culture and compliance with all regulatory and company requirements.
  • Drive quality performance, operational efficiency, throughput, and on-time delivery.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs related to safety, productivity, scrap, downtime, quality, and labor performance.
  • Partner with maintenance leadership to maximize equipment reliability and uptime.
  • Develop and execute continuous improvement initiatives focused on cost reduction and operational effectiveness.
  • Manage budgets, labor costs, maintenance spend, and overall plant performance.
  • Build a high-performance culture through coaching, accountability, and employee development.

Required Background

  • 10+ years of progressive manufacturing operations leadership experience.
  • Proven experience managing a flat rolled steel processing facility or steel service center operation.
  • Strong understanding of coil processing operations, production scheduling, maintenance, quality systems, and warehouse/logistics activities.
  • Experience leading multiple supervisors and large hourly workforces.
  • Demonstrated success improving safety, quality, productivity, and operational efficiency.
  • Strong financial and operational acumen, including budgeting and cost control.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Operations, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma experience.
  • Experience with carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum processing operations.

The successful candidate is a proven steel industry leader who understands the unique demands of a flat rolled steel processing environment and has a track record of leading large teams, improving plant performance, and delivering operational results while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.

Please note: direct flat rolled steel processing/service center leadership experience is required. Experience limited to fabrication, machining, tooling, die, or general manufacturing operations alone is not sufficient.
