Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage all SPD operations, including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, case cart management, and distribution.
  • Ensure consistent workflow to meet OR and procedural volume demands, minimizing delays and turnaround times.
  • Lead off-site reprocessing or multi-site SPD operations if applicable.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for SPD Supervisors, Lead Technicians, Tech I, II, and Non-Certified Technicians.
  • Recruit, onboard, and retain qualified staff to maintain appropriate staffing levels aligned with surgical volume.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and progressive discipline when necessary.
  • Develop and implement staff education, competencies, certification support, and cross-training programs.
  • Implement and monitor quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee biological monitoring, sterilization records, and documentation accuracy.
  • Investigate and resolve quality issues, tray errors, missing instruments, and infection prevention concerns.
  • Develop and manage the SPD operating and capital budgets.
  • Optimize labor productivity and reduce overtime through efficient scheduling and workload balancing.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and teamwork.
  • Maintain department policies, procedures, and standard work practices.
  • Oversee instrument repair, replacement planning, and capital equipment requests.
  • Evaluate cost-saving opportunities while maintaining patient safety and quality.
  • Serve as the primary SPD liaison to Perioperative Services, Infection Prevention, Risk Management, and Materials Management.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary committees and performance review meetings.
  • Communicate department performance metrics, improvement plans, and operational updates to leadership.
  • Oversee instrument inventory, tracking systems, and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Collaborate with OR leadership, clinical departments, and supply chain to support surgical case readiness and instrument availability.
  • Audit tray assembly accuracy, count sheets, peel packs, and labeling requirements.
  • Address service concerns and implement service recovery when needed.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings related to instrumentation, workflow, and quality initiatives.
  • Monitor adherence to infection control, safety, and universal precautions across the department.
  • Organize, store, and distribute instruments, trays, and equipment to ensure availability.
  • Prepare instrument trays and equipment for sterilization processes.
  • Decontaminate and sterilize instruments, medical supplies, and equipment.
