Job description

Mission Statement
Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components: patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.
Responsibilities*
  1. Process daily orders from vendors, invoices, and requisitions accurately and efficiently. This includes the ability to inspect items for damage, past expiration dates, and completeness (and to reject items as deemed appropriate), as well as to verify freight bills from vendors and report any discrepancies to the Manager.
  2. Stock dry food, frozen foods, paper products, and other items in an organized manner. This includes the ability to date all received items and rotate stock using the First In, First Out method.
  3. Maintain par levels of inventory in work areas. This includes the ability to recommend reorder quantities or times for stock items and adequately stock nourishment rooms daily.
  4. Put away and deliver stock in a timely manner.
  5. Take inventory and assist in reconciling any stock shortages.
  6. Take and record food temperatures accurately.
  7. Clean equipment and work area.
  8. Deliver floor stock items as ordered by outside departments.

Required Qualifications*
  1. Minimum of one year of food service experience
  2. Minimum of one year of stocking experience, including experience with first-in, first-out rotation practices
  3. Demonstrated understanding of basic food safety requirements
  4. Experience performing physical job tasks safely. This includes but is not limited to lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, standing (up to 8 hours), and pushing and pulling up to 35 pounds.
  5. Demonstrate excellent communication by having the ability to read English with comprehension, listen effectively, speak and write clearly, and accurately follow written instructions, including job routines, recipes, directions, and precautions on product labels.
  6. Demonstrate ability to work well independently with minimal guidance and to work well with others as part of a team.
  7. Must be able to transport stock utilizing two- and four-wheel carts or pallet trucks.
  8. Ability to perform excellent customer service. This includes but is not limited to demonstrating respect for coworkers, working effectively on a team as well as working independently with minimal guidance to ensure food items are served to patients as per established service and quality standards.
  9. Ability to multitask and work at a fast pace.
  10. Ability to be flexible with work schedules, job tasks, and job changes.
  11. Excellent attendance record.

Modes of Work
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .
Work Schedule
Standard hours: 36.5
Work days: Monday-Friday
Shift start/end times: Monday 5:00 am-12:00 pm/Tuesday-Friday 6:00 am- 2:30 pm
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
