Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Medical Lead, Simulation Laboratory to oversee the programming and operational responsibilities of the Simulation Laboratory, and provide leadership in the coordination of major simulation events/sessions/workshops in collaboration with internal and external partners. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Medical License in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. We are looking for someone with a minimum of five (5) years' experience working in a clinical area within a health care environment. Candidates that possess experience working in a leadership/supervisory role in a health care environment and experience in medical education, process improvement, medical technology and research are preferred.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Simulation Laboratory hosts over 220 events each year, and engages over 2,700 learners every year, promoting high-quality educational activities across all health professions including nursing, respiratory therapy, paramedicine, physicians and other allied health practitioners. Through collaboration with our academic and community partners we are fostering the future of healthcare in Northern Ontario and providing an environment for patient, and learner-safe education. Beginning with ensuring high-quality educators and a first-rate environment for learning, the HSN Simulation Laboratory has created the foundation for establishing a culture of patient safety, reflective team practice and patient-centred innovation.

KEY FUNCTION

Oversee the programming and operational responsibilities of the Simulation Laboratory, and provide leadership in the coordination of major simulation events/sessions/workshops in collaboration with internal and external partners.

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Vice President, Academic and Research Impact.

DUTIES:

  1. Support and provide guidance to the daily operations of the Simulation Laboratory within the approved business plan/budget.
  2. Develop and implement new strategies and initiatives to improve the development of programs at HSN's Simulation Laboratory.
  3. Improve interdisciplinary and inter-professional patient care through simulation.
  4. Facilitate and support continuing education and faculty development opportunities for HSN and NOSM University staff and all learners through simulation-based education.
  5. Collaborate with the Simulation Laboratory Manager to develop, support, achieve and report on annual departmental goals and outcomes.
  6. Engage with the Simulation Laboratory In-situ Program (i.e. Code Blue/White, HALO events, critical incidents, systems-testing and responsive programming) and act as co-debriefer and resource.
  7. Create and support a simulation environment that promotes evidence-based practice and implement improvements as required.
  8. Collaborate with local physicians, academic, and healthcare innovators and researchers to advocate for and engage in simulation innovation and research through the acquisition of research grants and publications.
  9. Maintain communication and collaboration with the Vice President, Academic and Research Impact, Senior Leadership, NOSM University Leadership, Physicians, and all staff within the program.
  10. Participate in the recruitment of Simulation Laboratory staff as required.
  11. Work with physician community to generate enthusiasm and set and maintain expectations for use of the Simulation Laboratory.
  12. Facilitate team building with HSN staff, within the walls of the Simulation Lab and during departmental training events.
  13. Co-develop and chair the Simulation Governance Committee with representation of leadership from internal and external stakeholders requiring routine Simulation Lab services in North Eastern Ontario.
  14. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  15. Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
  16. Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
  17. Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
  18. Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate, report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
  19. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
  20. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  21. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  22. Perform other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a Medical License in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  2. Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of five (5) years' experience working in a clinical area within a health care environment.
  2. Experience working as faculty/instructor, in simulation-based education for either physicians, medical learners, or inter-professional teams within the last 12 months is required.
  3. Experience working in a leadership/supervisory role in a health care environment is preferred.
  4. Experience in medical education, process improvement, medical technology and research is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated human resources and financial management skills.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of medical simulation technology and operations. 
  3. Demonstrated technical literacy with proficiency in Hypercare, Cayuse, and other health software programs.
  4. Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with key internal /external stakeholders at all levels.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and make sound judgments involving technical and confidential material.
  7. Demonstrated ability to coach, advise and teach others using the principles of adult learning.
  8. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  9. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  10. Knowledge of relevant legislation and principles of management, hospital committee structure, conflict management and resolution, system needs analysis and organizational assessment.
  11. Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and employees.
  12. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  13. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
