Job description


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Implement safety management systems that meet or exceed compliance and create value-added enhancement to plant operations via implementation of written standards, training requirements, monitoring/auditing elements, and corrective action steps.
  • Provide personal leadership and professional guidance to operations in safety management requirements, to include incident investigation, safety training and communication, inspection and auditing, hazard assessment, and implementation of site business safety plans.
  • Coordinate and conduct routine plant audits and physical inspections to determine compliance with safety programs, laws, and regulations.
  • Maintain, upgrade, or implement safety programs with continuous improvement as the objective. Such programs will include hearing conservation, respiratory protection, heat stress, crane safety, confined spaces, etc.
  • Maintain effective standardized tools to monitor the success of the safety management systems and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Track completion and verify the effectiveness of corrective actions identified through audits or investigations.
  • Plan and coordinate safety training as directed.
  • Evaluate, specify, and audit the proper application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain appropriate records in accordance with the SSAB Safety and Security Policy, related regulations, and statutes.
  • Assist with overseeing the contracted security service as directed by the Safety Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS
Competencies and Experience.
Required:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Minimum two years of experience in safety compliance/industry experience.
  • OSHA 10 certification or equivalent work experience to ensure working knowledge of, and the ability to interpret and apply complex local, state, and federal safety and occupational health regulations such as OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, ASME, and NRC.
  • Experience with industrial hygiene - lead programs, fit testing, and noise monitoring
Preferred:
  • Experience in industrial manufacturing processes and working environments.
  • Familiarity conducting investigations, audits, and inspections.
  • Familiarity with Safety Management systems
  • Previous experience with a comprehensive safety program

Education
Required:
  • Associate's degree in Safety, Environmental, Human Sciences, or Business Management
Preferred:
  • Bachelors degree in Safety, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related field
  • Formal education in Safety Management Program

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS
This position does not have any direct reports.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Employee will be required to sit and stand for several hours at any given time, depending on the demands at the time.
  • Employee may be required to push, pull, lift and/or carry items of up to 50 pounds to fulfill functions of the job.
  • Employee must be able to balance, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, climb, and crawl.
  • Employee must be able to twist at the waist, reach and perform overhead and waist-level tasks.
  • The position requires the employee to grip, handle, hold, and grasp with hands. Must also be able to sense temperature and texture.
  • This role will also be required to work in extreme conditions: Heat, cold, wet/humid, amid fumes/smoke/dust/dirt, in confined or elevated spaces, high noise, and mechanical/electrical/magnetic hazards.

  • Position is full time, exempt
  • Travel 10% of time in the field or at other SSAB locations
