What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Quality Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Quality Specialist, you need a solid understanding of quality assurance methodologies, process improvement techniques, and often a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Six Sigma, Lean, ISO standards, and statistical analysis software is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as CQE (Certified Quality Engineer). Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills are essential soft skills for identifying process issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure consistent product quality, regulatory compliance, and ongoing process optimization within an organization.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Process Quality roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

Process Quality professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent quality standards across different teams, identifying the root causes of quality issues, and adapting to evolving production processes. To effectively manage these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, utilize data-driven quality monitoring tools, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Regular training and cross-functional collaboration also play key roles in ensuring that quality standards are upheld throughout the organization.

What is process quality and what does a process quality professional do?

Process quality refers to the systematic monitoring and improvement of processes within an organization to ensure products or services meet defined standards of quality. A process quality professional is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating quality control systems, analyzing process data, and identifying areas for improvement. They work closely with various teams to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations, reduce errors, and increase efficiency across processes. Their goal is to help the organization deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes to customers.

What is the difference between Process Quality vs Quality Assurance Specialist?

AspectProcess QualityQuality Assurance Specialist
Primary FocusImproving and monitoring manufacturing or operational processesEnsuring products/services meet quality standards through testing and audits
CertificationsSix Sigma, Lean, ISO certifications often preferredISO 9001, Certified Quality Auditor, Six Sigma
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, production lines, operational settingsOffice-based, labs, inspection sites
Key ResponsibilitiesProcess analysis, optimization, defect reductionInspection, testing, compliance checks

While Process Quality focuses on improving processes to enhance efficiency and reduce defects, Quality Assurance Specialists concentrate on verifying that products or services meet quality standards through testing and audits. Both roles are essential in maintaining high-quality outputs but differ in their approach and scope.

At BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, we’re not just assembling battery systems; we’re leading a transformation. As a key member of our start-up team, you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to launch a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility from the ground up. Imagine: you, at the forefront of the electrification movement, helping to bring the next generation of vehicles to driveways, job sites and highways everywhere.
At BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, you will...
• use your entrepreneurial skills and team mindset to come up with data-driven solutions
• build and lead an agile team to deliver the advanced technology that drives the future
• create a culture of trust, encourage diversity of thought and foster leadership in others
• be part of the historic transformation of the automotive industry.
In this position...
The Process Quality Engineer (PQE) at BOBM is a critical role responsible for ensuring "Best in Class" quality during the Battery Pack Assembly process. This role focuses on robust process control, rigorous technical analysis, and the leadership of cross-functional initiatives to achieve a No Faults Forward (NFF) and Zero Defect manufacturing environment. The PQE will drive continuous improvement through engineering principles, manage complex containment actions, and ensure that all products meet Ford’s stringent safety and performance standards.

What you'll do...
1. Process Control & Technical Analysis
Process Monitoring: Manage and direct Statistical Process Control (SPC) activities to monitor process stability and capability.
Measurement Systems: Execute Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), including Gage R&R studies and variable data analysis, to ensure measurement integrity.
Contamination Control: Establish and maintain strict contamination control protocols essential for battery pack longevity and safety.
Error Proofing: Document, control, and verify error-proofing (Poka-Yoke) checks and internal process safeguards.
Technical Improvement: Apply engineering principles and analytical techniques to continuously improve manufacturing processes and products.

2. Problem Solving & Containment Management
Rapid Response: Support expedited concern resolution with cross-functional teams, including Production, Engineering, and Suppliers.
Containment Leadership: Coordinate quality concern containment actions, including Dock Holds and Special Checks, to eliminate any impact on the customer (VO).
Root Cause Analysis: Lead 8D resolution for Warranty and Vehicle Operations (VO) concerns, collaborating with Design, Production, and MP&L.
Defect Management: Manage quality documentation for First Time Through (FTT), 8Ds, Scrap, and Dock Audits.

3. Forward Planning & Simultaneous Engineering
MTC Process: Actively participate in Simultaneous Engineering meetings and Forward Planning to ensure the Manufacturing Technical Council (MTC) process is followed.
Design Input: Provide input for design and assembly concepts to yield nominal variations and improve manufacturability.
Standard Setting: Establish critical characteristics for gauging and define data collection methods for new and existing programs.
Benchmarking: Participate in interplant benchmarking exercises to adopt and share global best practices.

4. Quality Auditing & Systems
Auditing: Lead Quality Process Audits and monitor quality target levels for each build phase.
Systems Integration: Work fluently with traceability systems, end-of-line (EOL) test systems, and other required manufacturing execution systems.
Reporting: Prepare standard reports for Quality reviews within the plant and for senior leadership.

5. Leadership & Project Management
Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead initiatives across departments to drive the "Quality First" culture and achieve zero defects.
Continuous Improvement: Coordinate and mentor Green Belt and Black Belt projects within the department to drive efficiency and cost reduction.

You'll have...

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related).
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in Quality Engineering within a high-volume manufacturing environment (Automotive or Battery experience preferred).

Even better, you may have...

  • Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related).
  • Strong knowledge of APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and Control Plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute MSA (Gage R&R) and Variable Data Analysis.
  • Proficiency in 8D problem-solving methodology and Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification, or ASQ certification (CQE).
  • Experience with Battery Pack Assembly or high-voltage systems.
  • Familiarity with Ford-specific systems and the MTC process.
  • Ability to manage complex information & data and translate it into data-driven actionable improvements on the shop floor.
