Job description

Purpose

The Meat Wrapper learns the skills of handling fresh meat and other meat products, safe, sanitary and efficient operation of the meat department, ordering and inventory, equipment operations, and merchandising according to standards set by the company.  They merchandise and present fresh meat to maximize sales.  The Meat Wrapper demonstrates excellent teamwork, interpersonal skills, and commitment to the success of the team.

Responsibilities

  • Learns to package authorized beef, pork and poultry items according to company policies and procedures
  • Wraps, weighs and prices cuts of meat
  • Labels packages according to COOL, USDA and company standards
  • Ensures displays and case signs are updated appropriately, and that meat is merchandised and presented to maximize sales
  • May assist with product ordering
  • Maintains proper date rotation for dated and undated products per company policy, both in the display case and in the storage cooler
  • Prepares and places meat cuts and products in display counter according to company policy & procedures so they will appear attractive and appealing to the customers
  • Receives, inspects, and stores meat upon delivery, to maintain cold chain and ensure meat quality
  • Completes cleaning and sanitation of meat cases and meat rooms, ensuring excellent sanitation and quality standards are achieved and maintained
  • Responsible to follow and execute all company policies and procedures which includes but is not limited to: COOL, Food Safety, Sanitation, Meat/Produce Scale operation, Mark Downs, Inventory Processes, Meat POG’s, Meat Cutter Resource Manual, Daily Manager Signoff and Meat Cutting List
  • Protects company property, funds, and merchandise
  • Responsibilities may include other perishable and non-perishable related duties necessary to maintain optimal store performance

About You

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience in grocery perishable department or meat wrapping preferred
  • Experience safely using manual pallet jacks, hand tools and power equipment, including but not limited to, knives, wrappers, scales, slicers, cubing machine, and power saw (where certified to cut meat) preferred
  • Company work history will be strongly considered, including attendance, work performance, safety, policy compliance, and performance management
  • Proficiency in basic math skills required, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English
  •  Demonstrate effective oral and written communication
  •  Language proficiency in Spanish or other languages are a plus in certain locations
  • Must be dependable and flexible, including a willingness to work in other areas of the store as needed with little or no advance notice
  • Some travel may be required
  • Excellent customer service, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Must adhere to a uniform dress code
