Overview

The Process Mechanical Engineering Manager position is an exciting opportunity to join PM Group's Philadelphia area team out of Conshohocken, PA. The office delivers cutting-edge projects for the Pharmaceutical, Biologics, and Cell & Gene Therapy manufacturing facilities, supporting clients from feasibility and conceptual design through qualification and operational readiness. This leadership role is ideal for a technically strong engineering professional who enjoys client interaction, team development, and the delivery of complex engineering projects. The Process Mechanical Engineering Manager is responsible for leading project teams, providing technical oversight, managing project execution, and supporting the continued growth and development of the Process Mechanical Engineering discipline.

The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of mechanical and process engineering design within life sciences manufacturing facilities, including process systems, process utilities, piping systems, equipment integration, and GMP environments. Success in this role requires the ability to manage complex projects and operational priorities simultaneously while maintaining a collaborative, client-focused approach.

Project responsibilities will span all phases of engineering and design, including feasibility studies, conceptual and detailed design, construction documentation, procurement support, construction administration, commissioning support, and startup activities. Projects will primarily support pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and advanced therapy facilities, including both greenfield developments and existing facility expansions and renovations.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership & People Management
    • Lead, mentor, and develop Process Mechanical Engineering team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence
    • Support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and career development activities within the engineering team
    • Plan and manage engineering resources to meet project schedules and business objectives
    • Promote knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and adherence to PM Group engineering standards and best practices
    • Support succession planning and professional development initiatives across discipline
  • Project & Client Leadership
    • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with clients, project stakeholders, and business partners
    • Establish project objectives, execution strategies, and delivery plans aligned with client expectations and business requirements
    • Manage technical and commercial aspects of project delivery, including scope, schedule, staffing, quality, and budget performance
    • Lead project teams through all phases of design and execution while ensuring effective communication among clients, vendors, contractors, and internal disciplines
    • Monitor project performance, identify variances, implement corrective actions, and provide regular status updates to clients and senior management
    • Support business development activities, client presentations, proposals, and project pursuits as required
  • Technical Leadership
    • Provide technical leadership and oversight for process mechanical engineering and design activities across all project phases
    • Develop, review, and approve engineering deliverables, including:
      • Equipment List
      • Equipment Cost estimates
      • Technical specifications
      • Basis of design documents
      • Equipment and utility system layouts
      • Equipment procurement packages
      • Design calculations and reports
    • Lead equipment package development through kick-off meetings, design reviews, vendor coordination, FATs, SATs, and implementation activities
    • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, industry standards, GMP requirements, client standards, and PM Group procedures
    • Coordinate effectively with process, piping, electrical, automation, instrumentation, architectural, and CQV teams
    • Drive technical problem-solving, risk identification, constructability reviews, and engineering innovation throughout project execution
    • Support commissioning, qualification, and startup activities as required
  • Operational Excellence
    • Execute projects in accordance with PM Group's Quality Management System (QMS)
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory, environmental, health and safety, and statutory requirements
    • Promote continuous improvement of engineering practices, workflows, tools, and project delivery processes
    • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • 12+ years of engineering design experience in consulting, EPCM, or engineering services environment
  • Experience supporting Pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Cell & Gene Therapy, or other regulated life sciences facilities
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects and managing project teams
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Process systems
    • Process and GMP Utilities
    • Process equipment integration
    • Piping systems and specifications
    • GMP facility design
    • Engineering documentation and design standards
  • Experience with project planning, budgeting, resource management, and commercial project delivery
