Job description

Basic Function

HF Sinclair is seeking a Process Control DCS Engineer in El Dorado,KS who will be responsible to provide technical support and leadership for the refinery's Honeywell TDC3000 and Experion PKS control systems. The role includes maintaining and improving regulatory and advanced control strategies, supporting system reliability, and working with Operations and Engineering to ensure safe and efficient unit performance. The engineer will also drive optimization and margin improvement through the development of new control strategies and Advanced Control applications.

Job Duties
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Honeywell TDC3000 and Experion PKS systems, including configuration, logic, graphics, and point databases.
  • Monitor DCS performance, alarms, and system health to ensure reliable operation.
  • Tune and optimize regulatory control loops.
  • Provide support for PLC and SIS logic, including troubleshooting and documentation.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain APC applications such as multivariable controllers and inferential models.
  • Monitor APC performance and make adjustments as needed.
  • Identify and communicate margin improvement opportunities related to APC utilization.
  • Work with Planning and Operations to align APC objectives with refinery operating targets.
  • Support capital and maintenance projects involving control systems.
  • Participate in PHA, P&ID reviews, and MOC processes.
  • Prepare functional specifications and assist with testing, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Review contractor proposals and engineering documents for accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Perform DCS hardware and software maintenance and upgrades.
  • Maintain system backups, documentation, and cybersecurityaligned configurations.
  • Support modernization projects, including system migrations and network upgrades.
  • Provide daily support to Operations for troubleshooting control issues.
  • Assist with alarm management improvements and graphics updates.
  • Train operators and engineers on control strategies and system functionality.
Experience

A minimum of 3 to 15 years of experience in Process Control or DCS/Controls Engineering.

Preferred Experience

  • Refinery or petrochemical industry experience.
  • Experience with Honeywell TDC3000 and Experion PKS systems.
  • Experience with PCN/PCS infrastructure and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Experience with regulatory control tuning and APC implementation.
Education Level

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field) or equivalent technical experience.

Required Skills
  • Strong understanding of DCS, PLC, and SIS engineering concepts.
  • Ability to manage and execute control system projects.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Preferred Skill
Working knowledge of Microsoft products and experience with engineering software is preferred.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility
May be responsible for supervising contractors depending on assignment. 
Work Conditions
Office and plant based with up to 10% travel required.  Subject to varying weather conditions and required to work in all temperatures, including outdoors.

Physical Requirements
Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceive color differences,  required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards are not permitted), ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential (inability to maintain standard insurance rates is grounds for dismissal), valid State drivers license and proof of insurance required. Depending on location must satisfactorily complete a comprehensive medical physical examination.  Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces as permitted.
