Job description

Senior Process Engineer

Your Role at BSI
Our Process Engineers are responsible for designing safe and economic methods for clients to convert raw feed to modified products. The typical process industries in which we perform work include specialty chemicals, renewable chemicals, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and consumer products. We design manufacturing process for efficiency, government regulations, and cost benefits.

To support collaboration, mentorship opportunities, and effective project execution, BSI Engineering has adopted a hybrid work schedule in which employees are in the office a minimum of three days per week.


Responsibilities and Scope

  • Supervise site visits, walk downs, and site audits to gather field data on moderate projects.
  • Develop and provide discipline scope, deliverables, assumptions, and estimated budget for proposals.
  • Supervise & create Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and Mass & Energy Balances (M&EBs).
  • Developing Process Design Basis reports, Process Descriptions, and government compliance reports (e.g. air & water emissions).
  • Supervise & perform equipment sizing, prepare equipment specifications, prepare bid evaluations, review shop drawings, and maintain equipment lists.
  • Supervise & perform process calculations using BSI Spreadsheets & commercial software (e.g. PIPE-FLO).
  • Supervise & perform process simulations in Aspen Plus.
  • Supervise & prepare process safety studies, relief calculations, Code review studies, Electrical Area Classification (EAC) reviews & drawings, and participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs).
  • Supervise & develops plant layouts.
  • Supervise & write process functional descriptions and operating procedures.
  • Supervise, write, and perform factory acceptance tests (FATs) and site acceptance tests (SATs).
  • Supervise & independently participate in construction support, startup, and commissioning efforts.
  • Interface directly with clients, other design discipline counterparts, and project management.
  • Adhere to discipline scope, schedules and costs including submission of change orders.
  • Update forecast for all discipline staff on assigned projects.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and provide training sessions.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 15+ years of experience.
  • PE License preferred, not required.
  • Strong understanding of fundamentals in chemistry, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, material and energy balances, process unit operations and separations, reaction kinetics and reaction design theory, and thermodynamics.
  • Ability to visit project job sites to gather field information. Typical travel duration is up to 7 days and frequency is several times per year.


Desired Qualifications

  • Strong in Process modeling software (e.g. Aspen Plus) and hydraulic modeling (e.g. PIPE-FLO).
  • Knowledge of API Standards, specifically 520, 521, 650, and 2000.
  • Knowledge of ASME B31 Codes, specifically B31.3.
  • Knowledge of ASME BPVC, specifically VIII Div 1.
  • Knowledge of NFPA Standards, specifically 30, 497, 499, and 660.
