What is a Process Engineer Internship job?

A Process Engineer Internship is a temporary role where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in optimizing manufacturing or production processes. Interns assist in analyzing workflows, improving efficiency, and troubleshooting technical issues under the supervision of experienced engineers. They may work with data collection, process simulations, and quality control initiatives to enhance operations. This internship helps develop problem-solving skills and technical knowledge applicable to industries like manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and energy.

What types of projects or tasks are Process Engineer Interns typically involved with during their internship?

Process Engineer Interns are often assigned to support ongoing process improvement initiatives, which may include data collection and analysis, mapping and designing workflows, or assisting with troubleshooting production issues. They frequently collaborate with seasoned engineers and other departments such as quality assurance and operations to implement solutions or test new equipment and procedures. Daily responsibilities can range from conducting research and preparing technical documentation to participating in meetings and presenting findings. These experiences help interns build essential technical and interpersonal skills that are valuable for future engineering roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Process Engineer Internship position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Process Engineer Intern, you generally need a background in engineering (chemical, mechanical, or industrial), problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of process design and analysis. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, MATLAB, or process simulation software, and knowledge of Lean or Six Sigma methodologies, can be especially valuable. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability set candidates apart in this fast-paced and collaborative environment. These capabilities are important because they enable interns to effectively contribute to process improvements, ensure operational efficiency, and integrate seamlessly with cross-functional teams.

Job description

Imagine engineering the sophisticated fluid, gas, and chemical delivery systems that form the lifeblood of the world's most advanced semiconductor fabrication facilities. At SSOE you will continuously expand your expertise by confronting diverse and complex process engineering challenges unique to the semiconductor and advanced high-tech industrial sectors. From designing ultra-pure water (UPW) systems that deliver water cleaner than any found in nature, to engineering specialty gas and chemical distribution networks with exacting purity and safety requirements, to developing robust hazardous wastewater treatment solutions, your work will be at the intersection of precision, safety, and innovation. You'll be supported by access to advanced training, leading design and analysis tools including hydraulic modeling and pipe stress software, and a collaborative multidisciplinary culture. We foster your ambition with clear pathways for career progression, whether your aspiration is technical leadership, project management, or becoming a revered subject matter expert in high-purity process systems. All of this unfolds within a truly integrated team environment that champions knowledge sharing, innovation, and technical excellence, backed by the stability and proven delivery of a well-established firm.

We are seeking a Process Engineer to join our integrated design-build team, supporting the delivery of advanced technology, semiconductor, cleanroom, and mission-critical facilities. This role is well-suited for an engineer who has developed a solid foundation in process system design and is ready to take on greater responsibility in complex, high-performance environments. In this position, you will contribute to the design and execution of critical process systems that support cutting-edge manufacturing and operational performance. You will work closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams to develop practical, efficient, and reliable engineering solutions while continuing to grow your technical expertise.

At SSOE, we don’t just talk about the future, we build it. As a leader in industry AI adoption, we empower our team to work smarter by providing responsible access to the industry leading AI Large Language Models, vibe-coding platforms, and securely integrating advanced tools into every role. From day one, you’ll receive the training and support needed to leverage AI as a core tool for enhancing productivity, sparking creativity, and streamlining complex workflows.

  • Support the design and engineering of process systems, including fluid transfer, heat exchange, and high-purity piping systems.
  • Contribute to systems involving ultrapure water (UPW), high-purity water (HPW), specialty gases, chemical distribution, and wastewater treatment.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as flow analysis, pressure drop (friction loss), pump sizing, and basic heat transfer evaluations.
  • Assist in the development of PFDs, P&IDs, and system layouts under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Participate in equipment selection and specification, including pumps, filtration systems, heat exchangers, and chemical delivery systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and controls teams to ensure coordinated system design in a design-build environment.
  • Support field activities including construction coordination, system walkthroughs, and commissioning efforts.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues during design and installation phases.
  • Ensure designs align with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3–6 years of relevant experience in process engineering, preferably within a design-build or EPC environment.
  • Exposure to projects in semiconductor, advanced high-tech manufacturing, cleanroom, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Foundational knowledge in one or more of the following systems:
    • Ultrapure or high-purity water systems
    • Specialty gas and chemical distribution systems
    • Wastewater treatment systems (including solvent or acid systems)
    • Fluid transfer and pumping systems
    • Heat exchange systems
  • Understanding of piping systems, including basic pressure drop and material selection considerations.
  • Familiarity with PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Internship or project experience within semiconductor or advanced manufacturing facilities.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as SEMI or ASME B31.3.
  • Exposure to commissioning, startup, or field support activities.

Compensation & Benefits:

SSOE offers a competitive total compensation package designed to support and empower our employees and their families.

  • Salary: $80,000 – $110,000 per year, commensurate with location, education, and depth of experience.
  • Incentives: Leadership bonus program and ownership investment opportunities. We believe the people who build SSOE should share in its success.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance; employer-paid life insurance; and wellness program support.
  • Retirement: 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Professional Growth: Dedicated professional development funding, PE licensure and certification exam support, conference attendance, and structured career advancement programs.
  • Time Off: Generous paid time off (PTO) policy plus paid holidays.
