Job description

We are currently hiring a Protection and Control Engineer in LaBella's Program Management Services Division at our client's office in Rochester, NY.

The Program Management Services Division at LaBella provides comprehensive management services for complex projects and multi-year capital programs. Project teams are established to provide a customized mix of business consulting, project management, financial control and monitoring, administrative, and technical support services.

The Protection, Control and Metering Owner's Engineer will act as an independent advocate for the client in all aspects of project development, execution, and completion. The Protection and Control Engineer will provide support to our clients in protection and control aspects of various engineering design packages.

As a Protection and Control Engineer serving in the role of Owner Engineer, you will play a crucial role in overseeing and ensuring the integrity, reliability, and efficiency of electrical protection and control systems within a project. Your primary responsibility will involve reviewing and evaluating engineering documentation provided by detailed engineering companies to ensure alignment with project specifications, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Engineering Documentation Review

Thoroughly review and analyze protection and control system design documents, including single-line diagrams, relay protection schemes, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and associated documentation prepared by detailed engineering firms.

Salary Range: $75,000 - $120,000
The specific salary offered may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the protection and control systems are designed and installed in accordance to: applicable client and project specifications, applicable codes, network interconnection agreement requirements and engineering best practices.
  • Coordination and technical lead related to the protection and control discipline, from tender process to project execution until contract closure.
  • Deliver consistent, high quality, cost effective engineering advice to key stakeholders and assigned projects.
  • Manage aspects of assigned projects to ensure that equipment is supplied and installed in accordance with the required quality and engineering standards.
  • Manage the interface between program stakeholders and client engineering disciplines as it relates to protection and control, SCADA, and communication.
  • Represent the project team in technical meetings and project meetings.
  • Monitor protection and control design modifications proposals, and prepare reports assessing its suitability for the Project.
  • Review of non-conformities and evaluate proposed corrective actions.
  • Inspect the commissioning of mechanical and electrical aspects of all protection and control systems and equipment.
  • Review and approve various root cause failure analyses and associated corrective actions.
  • Provide responses to all protection and control (internal/external) inquiries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
  • Candidates with a Maine PE license or ability to obtain one within one year, will be given preference.
  • 5 years protection and controls experience in the power industry.
  • Experience in the design, management and commissioning of protection and control systems for distribution and distribution automation projects.
  • Experience in Distributed Energy Resource management processes and regulations.
  • Experience with Quality Management System standards (i.e. ISO-9001, TS-16949, etc)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Project, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Experience in SAP Customer Service and Work Management is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
