What is a probabilistic risk assessment?

A Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) job involves evaluating risks by using statistical methods to quantify the likelihood and consequences of potential adverse events. Professionals in this field apply mathematical models, simulations, and data analysis to assess uncertainties and improve decision-making in industries such as nuclear energy, aerospace, and finance. Their work helps organizations enhance safety measures, comply with regulations, and optimize system reliability. PRA analysts often collaborate with engineers, policymakers, and risk managers to develop strategies that mitigate potential hazards.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in probabilistic risk assessment?

Professionals in Probabilistic Risk Assessment often spend their days collecting and analyzing data, developing quantitative risk models, and preparing risk reports for stakeholders. They collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and regulatory personnel to evaluate system reliability and identify potential failure modes. Regular tasks include running simulations, updating risk assessments based on new information, and presenting findings to both technical and non-technical audiences. This role involves balancing analytical work with team-based problem solving, making it ideal for individuals who enjoy both independent analysis and collaborative projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in probabilistic risk assessment, and why are they important?

To thrive in Probabilistic Risk Assessment, you need a strong background in statistics, mathematics, and risk modeling, typically supported by a degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field. Familiarity with specialized software tools like SAPHIRE, R, MATLAB, or Monte Carlo simulation packages, as well as relevant certifications such as Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE), is often required. Excellent analytical thinking, communication skills, and attention to detail are highly valued soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial to accurately identify, quantify, and communicate potential risks, supporting informed decision-making in safety-critical industries.

Job Description

This role is responsible for the development and design of the site, layout, buildings and structures of the Xe-100 plant. This includes concept development and evaluation, as well as analysis and design of systems, structures, and components (SSCs). This role will collaborate with a multi-disciplined team of engineers, suppliers, construction contractors and other project stakeholders, and support key objectives in deploying the Xe-100 plant that has advantages in safety, reliability, economics and sustainability relative to current day power generation units.

Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Support development of plant site/layout and design of buildings/structures through final design and construction of the Xe-100 plant.
  • Perform, manage, and oversee engineering and construction of the site and building structures for the Xe-100 project. This includes planning, monitoring, and directing of the complete engineering efforts through all development life cycles.
  • Apply engineering principles, codes and standards and best practices to design the site, buildings and structures for hazards including seismic, flood and wind.
  • Define, manage, and verify the requirements for the site, buildings and structures. Ensure the buildings and structures perform required functions throughout the plant life cycle. Ensure that the requirements in the full life cycle are timely addressed in the system design (e.g., constructability, testability, reliability, maintainability, safety, flexibility, interoperability, etc.).
  • Develop innovative concepts that can be implemented in a cost-effective and schedule-considerate manner while meeting the needs of customers.
  • Develop and implement risk-informed performance-based (RIPB) design criteria. Assist other teams to perform risk and hazard assessments, such as probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), failure modes effects analysis (FMEA) and hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP).
  • Work with construction teams to evaluate constructability, sequencing, material take-off, cost estimate, schedule development, and modularization concepts for the Xe-100 plant.
  • Identify, define, and manage interfaces with internal and external teams to advance the Xe-100 design.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, national, and international codes, regulations, and quality standards.
