Job description

ABOUT US

Okland is a commercial general contractor and construction management company with more than 1,300 team members, delivering complex projects across healthcare, semiconductor, higher education, sports, hospitality, and other specialized markets. Founded in 1918 in Salt Lake City, we have grown for more than a century and operate throughout Utah, Arizona, and Idaho.

What Makes Okland Different?

We Create Remarkable Experiences

We believe how we build is just as important as what we build, and we approach every relationship with care. From clients and trade partners to team members and communities, we focus on creating experiences that earn trust.

We Share Success

Okland combines the stability of family ownership with employee ownership through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan. This unique structure provides the long-term perspective, and values-driven leadership that have guided our company for generations, while giving team members the opportunity to share the success they help create.

We Build Better Together

Our culture is rooted in accountability, humility, and excellence. We challenge the status quo, empower problem-solving, and trust our teams to take ownership and act. We learn from one another and work toward shared goals to deliver meaningful work with lasting impact. We invest in the next generation of construction talent through apprenticeships, internships, and scholarships for our communities. By expanding access for women, underrepresented groups, and families of our craft workforce who are first-generation college students, we strengthen the future of construction.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

Okland Construction is seeking motivated, curious, and detail-oriented Architecture students who want real project experience beyond shadowing. This internship is intentionally designed to support your licensure journey: you will earn AXP-eligible hours, and Okland will support and ensure proper experience certification through NCARB aligned with your AXP reporting requirements.

You’ll be placed in one primary track, VDC or Preconstruction, with exposure across teams so you can see the full building lifecycle from planning and coordination through turnover and performance.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY

Track 1: Virtual Design & Construction (VDC)

  • Support constructability/3D coordination workflows and issue tracking
  • Assist with model navigation, meeting notes, and organized documentation
  • Participate in coordination touchpoints with project teams and trade partners
  • Gain exposure to BIM/VDC tools tied to field decision-making
  • Support VDC Specific preconstruction workflows like 5D QTO and Design Review/Early 3D Coordination

Track 2: Preconstruction

  • Support quantity takeoffs, estimate assembly, and alternate/value option comparisons
  • Maintain bid tracking, bid tabs, and scope leveling sheets
  • Assist with feasibility research (zoning/code/AHJ) and constraints documentation

Internship Objectives

  • Understand how constructability, phasing, and schedule influence design outcomes
  • Incorporate cost, scope alignment, and trade input into project planning
  • Learn how VDC coordination supports field execution and reduces risk
  • Use close-out documentation to support troubleshooting and long-term performance

AXP & NCARB Support

  • Programming & Analysis (feasibility, constraints documentation)
  • Project Management (coordination, logs, documentation)
  • Construction & Evaluation (constructability exposure, field learning, closeout/warranty workflows)

You can expect structured deliverables and regular mentorship check-ins. Okland will support AXP reporting and ensure proper certification through NCARB, consistent with your NCARB status and applicable experience setting guidelines.

YOU ARE READY FOR THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE

  • Currently enrolled in an Architecture (or closely related) degree program
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and responsive
  • Clear communicator who works well across teams
  • Comfortable learning new tools in a fast-paced environment
  • Interested in how design becomes reality, and how buildings perform over time

WHAT WE OFFER
