JOB SUMMARY
Under direction, the Boardwalk Bowl Operations Manager leads day-to-day operations across the bowling center-including Front Desk, Guest Services, Party Hosts, and coordination with Restaurant, Bar, and Pro Shop-to deliver safe, efficient, and exceptional guest experiences. Serving as Manager on Duty (MOD), this role oversees facility closing, security, emergency response, and guest services on assigned shifts; drives quality control, safety training, staff performance, and revenue growth.
UNIQUE JOB REQUIREMENTS
Acts as the department's quality-control lead, safety trainer, and Safety Representative with the company; develops and maintains all required logs, records, and station guides. Works across all four departments (bowl, restaurant, bar, pro shop) to ensure seamless operations. Makes decisions as MOD that must be made firmly, rapidly, and consistently to ensure the safety of guests, team members, and facilities. Must be able to work flexible shifts 7 days per week between 8:00AM and 2:00AM. Shifts generally include Saturday and Sunday with weekdays off. CA Food Handler card required within 30 days of hire (or provide proof of current card).
JOB TASKS
Operations & Guest Experience Serve as Manager on Duty; oversee closing, security, emergency response, and guest services.
  • Perform all Front Desk functions: lane assignments, rental equipment, cash handling/transactions, ensuring leagues start on time, greeting guests, answering questions, handling escalated complaints, making PA announcements, and notifying mechanics/pin chasers of pinsetter malfunctions.

  • Ensure maximum lane and equipment utilization; maintain daily operating records and station guides (in partnership with the Director and Food & Beverage Manager).

  • Coordinate party and event schedules across departments and with fellow MODs; ensure staffing levels meet event needs.

  • Promote and sell corporate and individual parties, group parties, and special programs; serve as on-site host as needed.

  • Oversee daily facility maintenance; partner with Maintenance on housekeeping standards; inventory and order supplies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Safety, Compliance & Training
  • Lead all safety training (e.g., fire extinguisher use, evacuations, incident reporting); maintain comprehensive training logs.

  • Serve as the department's Safety Representative; ensure day-to-day operations meet all safety standards and policies.

  • Develop, recommend, and implement policies, systems, procedures, and station guides; ensure consistent adoption across teams.

  • Other duties as assigned.

People Leadership
  • Oversee, supervise, train, motivate, coach, counsel, and assist Bowl Manager with the discipline of staff across Front Desk, Guest Services, and Party Hosts.

  • Conduct interviews and make hiring recommendations to the Director, Boardwalk Bowling Center.

  • Uphold performance, grooming, and customer service standards; build a team-oriented culture focused on service excellence.

  • Schedule and coordinate staff for daily operations and special events; cross-train team members for coverage and growth.

  • Oversee employee programs and actively participate in Guest Service Committe and Boarwalk's Best Program.

  • Keep staff updated on special events and promotions.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other departments of the company.

  • Maintain professional conduct in the office.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Financial & Administrative
  • Partner with bookkeeping on: tips accounting, daily cash/account reconciliation, verifying shift paperwork, collecting and posting daily sales reports; administer lottery machines.

  • Serve as a backup payroll administrator as needed.

INTERNAL

High level of Guest interaction, vendors, and community representatives.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum: 5+ year of supervisory experience in a Bowling Center or closely related guest services environment.
Preferred: Experience leading multi-unit recreation/entertainment operations (bowling/attractions, F&B, pro shop) and coordinating cross-functional events.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and training best practices.

  • Ability to plan, organize, supervise, evaluate, and motivate a diverse team.

  • Ability to learn, apply, and explain Company policie and procedures.

  • Strong guest-service orientation; able to build rapport quickly and resolve complaints with tact and sound judgment.

  • Demonstrated ability to:

  • Enforce safety and security standards; make prompt, fair, and firm decisions as MOD.

  • Increase sales in corporate and individual parties, groups, and events.

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and station guides; train staff accordingly.

  • Solve complex operational and guest-service challenges.

  • Perform basic math, make change, and operate an electronic cash register.

  • Use computers to access email and generate reports; working knowledge of Microsoft office and Filemaker.

  • Maintain high standards of appearance for facilities and employees.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to obtain a CA Food Handler card within 30 days of hire.

  • Ability to use a POS system and cash handling systems.

  • Prepare work requests when needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to see and read agreements, documents, and correspondence.

  • Ability to hear normal conversations in person and by phone.

  • Ability to walk and stand for up to 7 hours per shift.

  • Ability to remain on feet and move continuously throughout a large, multi-department facility during shifts, including walking between bowling lanes, front desk, party rooms, restaurant, bar, pro shop and back of house areas.

  • Ability to climb stairs and navigate tight or crowded spaces, including during emergency response situations.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach to inspect facilities, retrieve supplies, assist guests or team members, and perform safety checks.

  • Bimanual dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate POS terminals, handle cash, write incident reports, complete logs, and use office equipment.

  • Ability to work in a loud, fast-paced environment with background noise from bowling lanes, music, and crowds, and to communicate clearly under those conditions.

  • Visual acuity sufficient to monitor guest areas, safety conditions, lane activity, and facility operations, both near and at a distance.

  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies, including evacuations, guest incidents, and safety hazards, which may require rapid movement and sustained physical activity.

  • Ability to work varied shifts including late nights, and to maintain focus and alertness during extended operational hours.

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull items up to 20 pounds occasionally.

  • Ability to use a standard computer terminal.

LICENSES/INSURANCE
  • May need to possess and maintain a valid U.S. drivers license. If so, DMV printout required.

  • Required to maintain automobile liability coverage with a minimum of $15,000.00 bodily injury one person/$30,000.00 bodily injury total accident/$5,000.00 property damage coverage per California's minimum liability insurance requirements.
