What is the difference between Prn Rn Pre Op vs Perioperative Nurse?

AspectPrn Rn Pre OpPerioperative Nurse
CertificationsRN license, possibly Pre Op certificationRN license, perioperative certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentPreoperative areas, outpatient clinicsSurgical suites, operating rooms
Employer & IndustryHospitals, outpatient surgery centersHospitals, surgical centers

Prn Rn Pre Op nurses primarily work in preoperative settings, preparing patients for surgery on a PRN (as-needed) basis. Perioperative nurses have a broader role, covering all phases of surgery including pre-op, intra-op, and post-op. While both roles require RN licensure and similar certifications, perioperative nurses often pursue specialized perioperative certifications. The main difference lies in scope and work environment, with Prn Rn Pre Op focusing on pre-surgical care and perioperative nurses handling comprehensive surgical patient care.

What does a prn RN pre op do?

A PRN RN pre-op provides nursing care to patients before surgery, including assessments, patient education, and preparing them physically and emotionally for procedures. They work on an as-needed basis, often in hospital or surgical settings, and must have current licensure and relevant certifications such as BLS or ACLS.
