What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private scrub?

To thrive as a Private Scrub, you need comprehensive knowledge of sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and medical terminology, typically supported by relevant healthcare certification and experience in an operating room environment. Familiarity with surgical instruments, infection control standards, and operating room protocols—often facilitated by training in perioperative technology or certification as a surgical technologist—is crucial. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are key soft skills for this role. These skills enable Private Scrubs to maintain a sterile surgical environment and support clinical teams effectively, ensuring optimal patient care and procedural outcomes.

What is a private scrub?

A Private Scrub is a surgical scrub technician who works exclusively with a specific surgeon or in private healthcare settings. Their responsibilities include preparing the operating room, sterilizing equipment, and assisting during surgery by handing instruments to the surgeon. They ensure a sterile environment and facilitate smooth surgical procedures. Unlike hospital-based scrub techs, they may work in private clinics, surgical centers, or directly contract with surgeons. This role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and strong teamwork skills.

How to become a private scrub tech?

To become a private scrub tech, you typically need to complete a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training or certification in sterile processing or surgical technology. Certification from organizations like the Certification for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) is often required or preferred, and on-the-job training is common in healthcare settings.

What does a private scrub do?

A typical day for a Private Scrub involves preparing the operating room by sterilizing equipment, organizing instruments, and ensuring all necessary supplies are available for surgical procedures. During surgeries, you'll assist surgeons by passing instruments, maintaining sterile fields, and anticipating the surgical team's needs. You may also help with patient preparation and post-operative clean-up of the operating area. The role requires collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other medical staff, making teamwork and effective communication essential. This dynamic environment offers unique learning opportunities and is ideal for individuals who thrive on precision and quick-thinking.

In addition to the recent unit updates, this team utilizes the most current evidence based supplies & products. Nursing leadership has brought in many new products in the last few years. In this unit, you will see women with many different types of pregnancies, singletons, twins & even triplets! VHC Health is Kaiser Permanente's premier center for their high-risk patient population, including antepartum patients, high-risk vaginal, external cephalic versions (where breech babies are rotated to vertex in hopes of having a vaginal delivery), TOLACs (Trial of Labor after Cesarean birth) and cesarean deliveries. Minor GYN cases such as D&C's, LEEPS, IUD insertion/removal are also performed on week days. What makes the Labor and Delivery unit unique is the fantastic doctor/nurse relationship, great teamwork and having an OR/GYN team that works alongside labor nurses to support the unit. Members of this team describe the unit as "feels like family" and mentioned they have a very supportive leadership team who jumps in, scrubs up, and helps when needed.
