What is a private equity internship?

A private equity internship is a temporary position, often offered to students or recent graduates, where individuals work with a private equity firm to gain hands-on experience in investment analysis, deal sourcing, due diligence, and portfolio management. Interns typically assist in evaluating potential investment opportunities, conducting financial modeling, and preparing presentations for investment committees. This internship provides valuable exposure to the world of private equity and can be a stepping stone to a full-time role in the industry.

What are private equity internship opportunities?

Private equity internship opportunities include positions at a variety of investment companies. These internships are somewhat geographically centralized, with opportunities being more common in heavily urbanized areas and less common in many rural regions. Depending on the characteristics of the area, you may find an internship at a bank, a local investment firm, or another type of institution. Private equity interns may help research investment opportunities, give presentations on whether or not the company should finance a project, or help full employees with miscellaneous tasks. Private equity internships are most common in the summer, when students have a break from school, but can also be found throughout the rest of the year.

What are some typical projects or tasks I can expect to work on during a private equity internship?

As a Private Equity intern, you will typically assist with financial modeling, conducting industry and company research, supporting due diligence processes, and preparing presentation materials for investment committees. You may also help monitor portfolio companies by analyzing financial performance and market trends. Collaborating closely with analysts, associates, and sometimes senior team members provides exposure to different stages of the investment cycle and offers valuable learning opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private equity intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Equity Intern, you need strong analytical skills, financial modeling proficiency, and a solid understanding of accounting and corporate finance, usually backed by coursework in finance or economics. Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, and databases like Capital IQ or Bloomberg, as well as experience with valuation techniques, is highly valued. Attention to detail, initiative, and excellent communication skills will help you effectively contribute and collaborate in a fast-paced team environment. These skills ensure you can rigorously evaluate investment opportunities, support deal execution, and add value to portfolio companies.
