What are private bartenders?

Private bartenders are professional bartenders who are hired to provide beverage service at private events, such as weddings, parties, corporate gatherings, or special occasions. Unlike working at a bar or restaurant, private bartenders typically travel to the event location and may be responsible for setting up the bar, mixing and serving drinks, and sometimes creating custom cocktail menus. They often work as freelancers or through bartending services and ensure guests have a safe and enjoyable drinking experience.

What are some common challenges private bartenders face when working at events, and how can they prepare for them?

Private bartenders often encounter unpredictable event environments, such as limited workspace, unfamiliar equipment, or last-minute menu changes. To manage these challenges, it’s important to arrive early for setup, communicate clearly with the event host, and bring essential tools and backup supplies. Flexibility, strong organizational skills, and the ability to adapt quickly help ensure smooth service and a positive experience for both guests and hosts.

How much should a private bartender charge?

Private bartenders typically charge between $25 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, location, and event complexity. Some may also include a flat fee or charge additional for travel, setup, and cleanup. Rates can vary based on the event size and whether the bartender is providing alcohol or just serving it.

What is the 50% rule in bartending?

The 50% rule in private bartending refers to the guideline that bartenders should aim to keep their alcohol costs at or below 50% of total sales. This helps ensure profitability by managing inventory and pour sizes effectively, often requiring accurate measurement skills and knowledge of drink recipes.

  • Foster an inviting and upscale environment aligned with The Retreat’s luxury standards

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2–3 years of bartending experience in a high-end hospitality or members-only environment

  • Prior experience with banquet or event bartending is strongly preferred

  • Deep knowledge of spirits, wine, champagne, and modern mixology

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

  • Impeccable grooming and professional demeanor

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and multitask efficiently

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid alcohol service certification (e.g., TIPS, ServSafe)

  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality and respect the privacy of all members and guests

  • Flexible availability, including nights, weekends, holidays, and special events

What We Offer:
  • Competitive compensation and gratuities

  • Exclusive work environment with high-profile clientele
