What is printmaking?

Printmaking is an artistic process that involves transferring images from a matrix, such as a woodblock, metal plate, or screen, onto another surface, usually paper or fabric. The process allows artists to create multiple originals of a single image, known as prints, each considered an original work of art. There are various printmaking techniques, including relief, intaglio, lithography, and screen printing, each offering unique possibilities for artistic expression. Printmakers often experiment with color, texture, and layering to achieve diverse effects in their work.

What are printmaking jobs?

Printmaking jobs focus on working to create prints using a variety of techniques that transpose an image onto a surface. As a printmaker, you may work with woodblock prints, silk screening, digital printmaking programs, lithography, etching, or engraving. Your duties could focus on creating fine art prints, commercial art, t-shirts, or other types of art and media. You can find most jobs in a printing studio, but once you have experience, you can also teach a printmaking class as part of an art program at a college or university.

What are some common challenges printmakers face when working on collaborative projects?

Printmakers often collaborate with artists, designers, and other creatives, which can present challenges such as aligning on artistic vision, managing shared studio resources, and coordinating production timelines. Effective communication is key to ensuring everyone’s ideas are respected and integrated into the final piece. Additionally, printmakers must be adaptable in their techniques to accommodate various styles and materials, making collaboration both rewarding and complex.

Job description

Unrivaled is seeking a highly detail-oriented and motivated full-time Print Production & Prepress Technician to join our graphics team at our headquarters in Ogden, Utah.

This is a hands-on, technical print and production role—not strictly a creative design position. You will be responsible for prepping print-ready artwork, running wide-format printing equipment, finishing graphics (laminating, cutting, weeding vinyl), and assisting with physical installations. Our work encompasses museum exhibits, commercial displays, retail environments, and custom physical spaces for national and international clients.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Preflight & File Prep: Review, preflight, and prepare incoming client/internal artwork files using Adobe Creative Suite to ensure proper resolution, color profiles, bleeds, and cut lines.

  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain wide-format equipment, including roll-to-roll printers, UV flatbeds, and Graphtec vinyl plotters.

  • Finishing & Prep Work: Perform post-print finishing work, including laminating, trimming, vinyl weeding, taping, and mounting graphics to various substrates (acrylic, PVC, wood, foam).

  • Installation: Assist with graphic installations both in-house and on-site at client locations (wall murals, vinyl graphics, environmental signage).

  • Workflow Tracking: Maintain project status updates and task tracking within our project management software (Teamwork) to keep jobs moving through production on schedule.

  • Support: Work closely with the Print & Signage Production Manager and production team to ensure quality standards and accurate job fulfillment.

What You’ll Be Bringing:

  • 1+ years of hands-on experience in print production, sign making, prepress, or wide-format graphics.

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Illustrator and Photoshop) for technical file preparation and preflighting (not creative design).

  • Familiarity with print RIP software, color matching, and file setup for wide-format output.

  • Hands-on experience operating print equipment, vinyl cutters/plotters, laminators, and hand tools.

  • Familiarity with graphic substrates, vinyl application techniques, and print finishing processes.

  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced custom fabrication graphics shop.

Company Description

We design and deliver brand experiences on levels only dreamt of—and we do it all in-house—from design, to digital development, to fabrication, to install.
