Job Summary:
This posting is for a pooled position. Application submissions for "[POOL]" positions are accepted on an ongoing basis to ensure a continuous and ready pool of qualified candidates for immediate review when the need arises. If/when a position becomes available, the College will review applications from this pool, and interview candidates whose qualifications best match the specific opening.
Applicants must reapply to the pool annually to maintain their active status in the pool.
Staffs the college-wide Student Help Desk and resolves students' software and hardware problems. Coaches students one on one and in small groups in digital literacy and advanced application use. Performs technical work on software and hardware projects and maintains computer lab.
Essential Duties:
1. Assists Librarian/Computer Lab Specialists on software and hardware projects. Replaces and configures hardware as assigned. Assists in maintaining the operational condition of equipment, including network, software, and hardware.
2. Assists students as needed with software and hardware problems. Performs instructional and lab support for students in various software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, Internet searches, electronic mail, and software. Develops training aids for software applications and provides instruction as needed. Creates signage for computers. Refers students to faculty when appropriate. Reports instances of non-compliance with policy/procedures to other library staff.
3. Performs routine cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs on computers and other equipment. Monitors equipment usage. Helps replenish supplies; assists the Librarian/Computer Lab Specialists in preventive maintenance and implementing the regularly scheduled cleaning of equipment. Organizes and prioritizes work to manage time effectively.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical Skills and Abilities:
  • Requires good arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate a keyboard and other office equipment.
  • Requires sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate effectively with staff and students.
  • Requires visual acuity to read numbers and words.
  • Must be able to lift and navigate light to medium (10-50 pounds) weight equipment or objects. Requires the ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop and crawl.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed indoors in a highly visible, busy, interruption-filled library with minimal exposure to safety and health hazards.
  • Work activities rotate between sitting at a computer station to walking to and from student computer stations. Substantial time is spent working at a computer.
  • This position may also include scheduled shifts working remotely.

Education and Experience

  • Position requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Requires experience, education, or demonstrable knowledge in a computer or technical help desk field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires a thorough understanding of the operation and maintenance of computers and software programs, including working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft products, printers, scanners, wireless network, cloud storage, video conferencing, and email, sufficient to address student questions or problems.
  • Requires well-developed interpersonal communication and customer service skills to interact with our diverse community.
  • Requires the ability to maintain the lab and equipment safely and in an organized manner; to instruct students in the use of equipment and programs.
  • Must have the ability to learn new software as needed.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively despite frequent interruptions
  • An educational approach focused on helping students learn to help themselves versus a problem solving approach is preferred.
  • Spanish Language fluency, preferred.

Compensation Information:
All Part-time Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule, corresponding to the position's grade. Placement at a higher step on the salary schedule is not negotiable. Step increases are subject to eligibility, and only take place at the end of the Fiscal Year in July if approved and submitted by the employee's supervisor of record. Hours worked in more than one position or department cannot be combined for step advancement. Part-time Classified employees are paid once monthly, on the last day of the month.
