Print Collateral information

What is print collateral and what does a print collateral specialist do?

Print collateral refers to the collection of printed materials used by a business or organization to support its marketing and branding efforts. People working in print collateral are responsible for designing, producing, and managing items such as brochures, flyers, business cards, posters, and catalogs. Their role often involves collaborating with graphic designers, printers, and marketing teams to ensure that the materials align with the brand’s image and communication goals. They also oversee the quality, consistency, and distribution of these materials to reach the intended audience effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a print collateral specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Print Collateral Specialist, you need expertise in graphic design, print production processes, and knowledge of branding standards, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Proficiency in design software like Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with prepress and print management systems are typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure that print materials are visually compelling, brand-consistent, and delivered efficiently to support marketing and communication goals.

What is the difference between Print Collateral vs Graphic Designer?

Print CollateralGraphic Designer
Focuses on creating printed marketing materials like brochures, flyers, and postersDesigns visual content for both print and digital media, including branding, websites, and advertisements
Requires knowledge of print production, color management, and layout for physical mediaRequires skills in digital design software, visual communication, and creative concepts
Works primarily in marketing, advertising, and corporate communicationsWorks across various industries including advertising, media, and branding agencies

Print Collateral specialists focus on designing and producing printed marketing materials, emphasizing print production skills. Graphic Designers have a broader scope, creating visual content for both print and digital platforms. While there is overlap, Print Collateral roles are more specialized in physical media, whereas Graphic Designers often work across multiple media types.

How to become a print collateral specialist?

To become a print collateral specialist, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with experience in graphic design, printing processes, or marketing. Skills in Adobe Creative Suite, attention to detail, and knowledge of printing equipment are important, and some roles may require certifications in graphic design or print production. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions can also help build relevant skills for this role.
