What is print collateral and what does a print collateral specialist do?

Print collateral refers to the collection of printed materials used by a business or organization to support its marketing and branding efforts. People working in print collateral are responsible for designing, producing, and managing items such as brochures, flyers, business cards, posters, and catalogs. Their role often involves collaborating with graphic designers, printers, and marketing teams to ensure that the materials align with the brand’s image and communication goals. They also oversee the quality, consistency, and distribution of these materials to reach the intended audience effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a print collateral specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Print Collateral Specialist, you need expertise in graphic design, print production processes, and knowledge of branding standards, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. In this role, you will take full ownership of end-to-end print production, collaborating closely with project managers, designers, and external vendors to deliver high-quality marketing collateral on tight corporate timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Production & Prepress Management: Oversee the prepress phase, inspecting digital proofs and approving production samples to guarantee brand integrity, color accuracy, and technical specifications.
  • Vendor Procurement & Negotiations: Source, bid, and manage external print vendor relationships, identifying cost-saving opportunities through strategic material and run-size recommendations.
  • Scheduling & Estimating: Partner with internal Project Managers to build accurate print schedules, scopes, and budget estimates aligned with broader campaign launch dates.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the technical print expert for internal creative teams, advising on paper stocks, specialty inks, coatings, and binding/finishing techniques.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on technical mastery of sheet-fed, web, and digital printing, including prepress requirements, paper weights/finishes, color management, and bindery processes.

  • Working proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud to review and verify production-ready files; experience with enterprise workflow tools (Workfront) is a plus.
  • Direct, transparent communication style with the confidence to drive projects independently, ask critical questions, and provide candid technical feedback.
  • Baseline familiarity with regulated communications (such as HIPAA guidelines) is preferred.
