Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...About the Team At Walmart, we’re reimagining the future of shopping through AI-powered, agentic experiences that help customers discover, decide, and purchase more easily—wherever they are. Our team focuses on building intelligent shopping journeys with Sparky—our AI super agent—on Walmart platforms as well as through strategic partner ecosystems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and other emerging AI interfaces. We design experiences that blend Walmart’s unmatched assortment, value, and fulfillment capabilities with conversational AI, automation, and proactive assistance. This work sits at the intersection of consumer retail, applied AI, and platform design, and it’s evolving fast. We have a rare opportunity to shape how millions of people shop using AI—setting new standards for trust, usability, and delight. We work closely with business, product, engineering, and data science partners to move quickly from vision to reality. We’re looking for a creative, talented Principal UX Designer who can coalesce complex systems—LLMs, agents, APIs, and human workflows—into intuitive, human-centered experiences, while also raising the bar for craft, strategy, and design culture across the organization. This opportunity is in Sunnyvale or San Bruno, California where we are expanding our design community focused on eCommerce and AI Shopping.  You will sweep us off our feet if you have…
  • Mastery across a wide spectrum of design disciplines, including visual, interaction, and systems design
  • Strong craft and a dedication to efficient, high-quality execution
  • The ability to clearly communicate and negotiate complex, AI-driven flows through compelling narratives, designs, and prototypes, both to internal partners as well as external partners
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to envision future states with north star experiences, and a systems-thinking approach to simplifying highly technical and ambiguous problem spaces for quick iteration and learning
  • A track record of shipping successful products in fast-moving environments with multiple senior stakeholders
  • Experience facilitating design sprints, workshops, or research sessions across cross-functional teams
  • Comfort with ambiguity—especially in emerging spaces like AI, automation, and agentic behavior
  • A human-first mindset: you are authentic, empathetic, and skilled at building trust and alignment across disciplines
You will make an impact by:
  • Designing best-in-class AI shopping experiences with a high bar for craft, clarity, and usability
  • Shaping agentic shopping journeys where AI proactively assists customers across discovery, decision-making, and purchase
  • Designing experiences that span Walmart-owned surfaces and third-party AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini), ensuring consistency, trust, and brand integrity
  • Partnering closely with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and UXR to translate AI capabilities into meaningful customer value
  • Balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints in a rapidly evolving AI landscape
  • Rapidly prototyping, testing, and iterating on concepts in a fast-paced environment
  • Creating scalable, extensible experiences in partnership with Design Systems and Platform teams
  • Championing design thinking and responsible AI principles throughout the organization
  • Staying current on trends in AI, agents, conversational and generative UX interfaces, and the broader retail and technology landscape
Preferred qualifications:
  • Degree in Digital Design, HCI, Information Architecture, or a related field, and 7+ years of experience in product design
  • Experience designing complex systems, platforms, or AI-driven consumer products
  • Experience designing within the evolving state of design and AI tools
  • A fantastic portfolio demonstrating a high level of craft, systems thinking, interaction depth, and shipped impact
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
