What is a principal software engineer?

A principal software engineer is in charge of software development. In this career, you guide the software design process and inspect software programs to make suggestions for improvements. Principal software engineers also process complex data and may need to enforce software design, development, and maintenance requirements. Your job requires a high level of technical knowledge and skills and a thorough understanding of the software development process. Your employer may require you to have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in software development. Similar job titles include software architect and principal software developer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a principal software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Principal Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in software architecture, programming languages, and system design, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related field. Advanced proficiency with development frameworks, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and familiarity with DevOps tools and agile methodologies are typically required. Exceptional leadership, mentorship, and communication skills help facilitate cross-functional collaboration and guide technical teams. These skills are crucial for driving technical vision, ensuring scalable solutions, and fostering innovation within complex projects.

How does a principal software engineer typically balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

Principal Software Engineers often split their time between technical contributions—such as designing system architecture and reviewing complex code—and guiding teams through mentorship, technical direction, and cross-functional collaboration. While they may not code as much as junior engineers, they remain highly involved in critical implementations and code reviews. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management, clear communication, and the ability to prioritize tasks that have the highest impact on project and team success.

Job description

The Opportunity

Ulteig is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and develop complex full-stack software solutions that support scalable, maintainable SaaS and enterprise applications. Ulteig defines digital transformation as the deliberate use of digital technologies to modify or create business processes, customer experiences, and enable organizational culture in response to or anticipation of changes in the market, customer insights, and business needs. This role offers the opportunity to apply strong coding skills, technical problem-solving, and sound decision-making while contributing to technical designs, project approaches, and delivery outcomes within a product or project team. You’ll collaborate closely with software engineering, solution architecture, program, and product management to build intuitive solutions, troubleshoot complex issues independently, apply established engineering standards and best practices, and help bring others along through informal coaching and knowledge sharing. You’ll be part of the Software Engineering Group in the newly formed Digital Transformation business unit, delivering innovative software to support Ulteig’s engineering workflows, R&D initiatives, AI capabilities, and SaaS applications.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure full-stack solutions for SaaS and enterprise applications across React, TypeScript, C#/.NET APIs, Azure services, and SQL-backed data stores.
  • Contribute to application design and technical approaches by partnering with software engineering, product management, and solution architecture to support practical solutions that balance user experience, API design, data modeling, performance, and maintainability.
  • Deliver product capabilities through hands-on implementation of responsive frontend experiences, backend services, APIs, and data interactions that support reliable business workflows.
  • Mentor and coach team members by sharing expertise in software engineering principles, full stack design patterns, API development, data access strategies, cloud-native practices, and modern development workflows.
  • Drive clarity and alignment within delivery efforts by engaging with project management, product management, and engineering to refine features, estimates, technical approaches, dependencies, and work breakdown structures.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and agile team culture through iterative delivery practices, engineering discipline, code quality, and continuous improvement across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues independently across the application stack, applying a growth mindset to resolve frontend, backend, API, data, integration, and cloud-related technical challenges while helping team members overcome blockers efficiently.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement through demos, tutorials, and team discussions that strengthen delivery practices, technology adoption, and consistent use of established engineering standards.
  • Contribute to reliable software delivery by supporting Azure DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, YAML and Bicep-based infrastructure configurations, deployment workflows, monitoring, security, and cost-conscious management of Azure resources across environments.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools and coding agents responsibly as part of modern software engineering practices to improve productivity, accelerate problem-solving, support code quality, and strengthen delivery outcomes.

Disclaimer: The preceding description is not designed to be a complete list of all duties and responsibilities required of this position.

What We Expect from You

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable full-stack applications across modern frontend frameworks, backend services, APIs, and relational data stores.
  • Strong experience with React, TypeScript, C#/.NET, API development, and SQL-backed application development in enterprise or SaaS environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to contribute to application design, technical approaches, and delivery of maintainable software solutions that balance user experience, performance, reliability, security, and long-term product health.
  • Experience working in Agile environments with feature refinement, estimation, iterative delivery, and cross-functional planning.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts, design decisions, trade-offs, and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to build strong relationships across software engineering, product management, project management, solution architecture, and business stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of modern software delivery practices, including CI/CD concepts, cloud-based deployment workflows, environment management, and operational reliability.
  • Confidently embraces AI-assisted development tools and coding agents as part of modern software engineering workflows to accelerate problem-solving, improve productivity, and strengthen code quality.
  • Self-driven with a strong sense of ownership, accountability, and follow-through for delivering impactful, well-engineered solutions.
  • Ability to navigate challenges and resolve conflicts constructively while supporting team collaboration, sound technical decisions, and project success.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and staying current with emerging technologies, engineering practices, cloud platforms, and modern development trends.
  • Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.
