Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

We are seeking a Principal Platform Engineer - a senior individual contributor who will serve as a technical leader within the SMAI Platform Engineering team. In this role, you will architect, optimize, and scale the platforms that power Micron's most critical analytics and AI workloads. You will influence the technical direction of the platform through hands-on engineering, architectural leadership, and deep collaboration with the innovation team and solution architects. Innovation, AI adoption, and helping others is encouraged on this team!

Responsibilities:

  • Service Enablement & Innovation: Stay updated on platform roadmaps and upcoming changes through regular communication with vendors and public forums. Collaborate with solution architects to evaluate and adopt the latest tools and features that accelerate technical solution delivery. Evaluate new and private-preview services and features following SMAI Enablement and Architecture Review Board (ARB) guidelines. Clearly document findings, communicate insights with platform team members, and provide structured feedback and requirements to vendors. Establish innovative techniques to improve performance and optimization of platform workloads. Architect end-to-end systems that may span IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) - and clearly diagram and communicate designs with peers and customers.

  • Platform Support & Operations: Maintain a high standard of service level by promptly addressing customer requests with a professional, customer-first attitude. Document standard operating procedures (SOPs), new features, and known limitations for the platform team and its customers. Partner with SMAI project teams to optimize solutions, including query tuning and recommending appropriate services for high performance, scalability, and extensibility. Proactively identify inefficiencies and anomalies through monitoring solutions to optimize platform costs and resource utilization. Stay informed about new services and features released on supported platforms, evaluating their applicability to SMAI workloads. Develop and improve platform metrics and observability to surface performance bottlenecks and error-prone patterns. Collaborate with partner teams (Cloud, Unix, Network) to ensure seamless end-to-end operations. Work closely with SMAI solution architects and enablement teams to establish common services, tools, and reusable patterns.

  • Security: Adhere to security standards to protect Micron's intellectual property and sensitive manufacturing data. Design and implement platform and data security architecture, including Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and other industry-standard security frameworks.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field with 10+ years of experience in Platform Administration and/or Cloud Engineering.

  • Deep knowledge of distributed systems and cloud architecture, primarily on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with exposure to other public and private cloud providers a plus.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with Kubernetes, including deployment, scaling, and monitoring of containerized workloads, paired with a strong understanding of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles and practical experience using Terraform.

  • Foundational knowledge of Machine Learning and Data Science concepts, with familiarity in Generative AI, prompt engineering, and agentic AI, enabling effective support and optimization of platforms serving modern ML/AI workloads and their infrastructure requirements.

  • Excellent collaborator with strong written and verbal communication skills, able to work effectively across matrixed teams, independently drive complex and ambiguous technical initiatives to completion, produce clear documentation and technical artifacts, and continuously learn and adapt to evolving cloud, AI, and platform technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Software development skills and knowledge of DevOps processes and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Google Cloud Professional certifications, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA/CKAD), Terraform Associate, or equivalent.

  • Experience supporting large-scale, multi-tenant platforms serving highly technical user communities.
