How does a Principal Full Stack Engineer typically balance hands-on coding with leadership and mentoring responsibilities?

As a Principal Full Stack Engineer, you'll often split your time between developing complex features, setting technical direction, and guiding team members. While you remain actively involved in coding, a significant part of your role involves mentoring junior engineers, conducting code reviews, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as product management and design. This balance allows you to influence both the technical quality and the professional growth of your team, while ensuring delivery of robust, scalable solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Principal Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Principal Full Stack Engineer, you need deep expertise in both front-end and back-end development, a strong grasp of software architecture, and a proven track record leading complex projects—typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Mastery of multiple programming languages (such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, or Java), cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, and frameworks like React or Node.js is usually required, along with familiarity with DevOps practices. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and problem-solving abilities help you guide teams and collaborate across departments. These skills are essential to design scalable systems, drive technical excellence, and ensure team alignment on strategic goals.

Job description

OVERVIEW

Backed by a major non-profit healthcare consortium, our client is a newly formed, well-funded healthcare technology spin-off on a mission to fix a fundamentally broken industry. They are building the universal operating system for healthcare—an AI-native, event-driven platform connecting payers, providers, and patients. This is not about maintaining legacy systems; it is about building a disruptive, intelligent data hub from the ground up.

This is a hands-on, coding-heavy Principal role for a builder, not an enterprise architect. You will write production code every day across the full platform—front-end, back-end, and full-stack work spanning AI and chat, document processing, analytics, and claims processing, all on a single modern tech stack. You will architect where it matters (assembling high-performance services, designing database schemas), but architecture is one part of the job, not the whole job.

The environment is startup-minded with CI/CD and full end-to-end ownership. Developers own setup, testing, and integration testing without handing work off across silos, which lets the team move faster than a traditional enterprise structure allows. We are looking for self-driven engineers who push back with suggestions rather than waiting for direction.

• *Must be eligible to work on W2 without sponsorship. Not eligible for C2C.

  • Pay Rate: $85–$95/hr
  • Duration: 6-month contract-to-hire
  • Location: Hybrid or Remote, however must reside in the following states: WA, OH, CA, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, MD, MN, NV, OR, AL, IL, VA, WI, TX, NY
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Write production code daily in Node.js and TypeScript to build scalable, cloud-native applications across all platform products.
  • Build back-end services, APIs, and front-end components in React, working as a full-stack contributor rather than within a single silo.
  • Build secure, high-scale enterprise APIs and integration layers, including API gateways and event-driven systems.
  • Own work end to end—setup, development, testing, and integration testing—within a CI/CD and DevSecOps workflow.
  • Architect high-performance services and design database schemas as part of building, not as a separate hand-off.
  • Incorporate AI capabilities and real-time data streaming into the platform.
  • Work within Azure using Kubernetes (AKS), Docker, and Terraform to deploy and scale applications.
  • Provide proactive, tech-lead-caliber reporting and guide other engineers through code reviews and best practices while remaining deeply hands-on in the code
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, currently hands-on at a Senior, Staff, or Principal level. This is a builder role; candidates whose recent work is primarily architecture or oversight are not a fit.
  • Deep, current expertise in Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Strong front-end experience with React.
  • Deep experience building APIs and back-end services.
  • Self-driven working style with a track record of proposing improvements and pushing back constructively rather than waiting for direction.
  • Strong communication skills with proactive, tech-lead-caliber reporting expected at the principal level.
  • Cloud-native development experience in Azure, hands-on with Kubernetes (AKS), Docker, and Terraform (Infrastructure as Code)
System Design & Platform Experience
  • Experience building multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
  • Strong understanding of data isolation, scalability, and system design.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture and integrations.
Nice to Have
  • AI integration experience.
  • API gateways / MuleSoft.
  • Healthcare or other regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC 2).
