Holtec Palisades is currently seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to join the Palisades Nuclear Plant team in Covert, MI.

Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is set to become the first nuclear power plant in the United States to restart after previously entering the early stages of decommissioning. By joining our team, you will be part of a unique and historic undertaking for the industry and the nation.


Job Summary/Purpose

Ensures the safety and compliance of fire protection systems at Palisades Nuclear Plant by providing expertise in fire protection engineering, maintaining code compliance, and supporting operational readiness through effective design, testing, and maintenance of fire detection and suppression systems.


Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides expertise in fire protection codes and programs, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations, including NFPA standards.
  • Prepares for and supports NRC/INPO pre-operational inspections related to fire protection systems.
  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of fire detection and suppression systems through testing and analysis.
  • Reviews design and field changes for accuracy, impact on fire protection programs, and adequacy of functional testing.
  • Develops and improves preventive maintenance tasks based on corrective actions, operating experience, and performance monitoring feedback.
  • Develops and provides technical support for surveillance testing, fire protection pre-plans, impairment monitoring, and reporting processes.
  • Ensures appropriate training, guidance, and reference materials are provided for station personnel involved in fire protection activities. Participates in and assesses fire drills and emergency response exercises.
  • Reviews and responds to industry operating experience to incorporate lessons learned and best practices.
  • Plans, organizes, and manages work to meet project schedules and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Evaluates equipment failures, performs predictive and root cause analysis, and recommends corrective actions.
  • Provides guidance and training to other employees and contractors on fire protection technical issues.
  • Ensures engineering work aligns with the plant’s design basis and supports safe and economical nuclear plant operations.
  • Controls engineering costs through resource optimization and tracking expenditures within budget parameters.
  • Must be able and willing to complete 10CFR50.59 qualification.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering or an Engineering degree from an accredited college or university highly preferred.
  • Alternatively, a Professional Engineer license combined with 4 or more years of Fire Protection Engineering experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree in Fire Protection.

Minimum Experience Required Of The Position

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in fire protection engineering preferred.
  • Nuclear power plant experience is preferred.
  • If not a graduate of an accredited engineering curriculum, a minimum of 6 years of engineering experience indicative of growth in engineering competency and achievement is required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required Of The Position

  • Detailed knowledge of fire protection codes, standards, and regulations, including NFPA standards.
  • Technical understanding of fire protection systems and nuclear power plant operations.
  • Working knowledge of plant procedures, systems, and processes related to fire protection.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft desktop software.
  • Outstanding communication, conflict management, and change management skills.
  • Knowledgeable in probabilistic risk analysis methods and system analysis.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Any Certificates, Licenses, Etc., Required For The Position

  • Desired: Membership in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE).
  • Desired: Participation in industry groups such as the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
  • Desired: SRO license or certification on a PWR or BWR; Professional Engineering license.
