With over 70 employees and various locations across the Southeast, the company provides the full suite of electrical services and solutions including planning, designing, engineering, consulting, generator sales and electrical construction services. About the role:

We are currently seeking a Principal Substation Design Engineer to lead the development of a high-performing team of engineers while growing and maintaining a portfolio of clients. This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of the company and the energy landscape. As the Principal Substation Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design, planning, and execution of substation projects across the Southeast U.S. You will oversee the development of a team of junior engineers, providing mentorship and technical leadership to ensure that all projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality. Additionally, you will play a critical role in expanding the companyโ€™s client base, developing new business opportunities, and driving growth within the region. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a highly skilled engineer with a passion for substation design and team development.


Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Lead and mentor a team of junior substation design engineers, providing guidance, training, and support to help them grow in their careers.
    • Develop a collaborative work environment that encourages innovation and ensures high-quality engineering deliverables.
    • Oversee the review and approval of engineering designs and documentation to ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and client requirements.
  • Client Relationship Management & Business Development:
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential clients across the Southeast U.S. to expand the companyโ€™s market presence.
    • Drive business development activities by identifying and pursuing new project opportunities, preparing proposals, and presenting technical solutions to clients.
    • Work closely with senior management to align business development strategies with regional market needs and growth targets.
  • Substation Design & Engineering:
    • Oversee the design of electrical substations, including high-voltage and medium-voltage systems, protection and control schemes, and equipment layout.
    • Ensure that all substation designs meet required specifications, standards, and safety codes, and are optimized for performance and cost.
    • Provide technical expertise in the development of system studies, including short-circuit analysis, load flow, and relay coordination for substations.
  • Project Management:
    • Manage the full lifecycle of substation design projects, from conceptual design through to construction and commissioning.
    • Develop project schedules, manage budgets, and ensure that resources are appropriately allocated to meet project timelines.
    • Conduct site visits, collaborate with clients, contractors, and vendors, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance:
    • Ensure that all designs, plans, and documentation adhere to relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards (e.g., ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC).
    • Implement and promote quality control processes to ensure accuracy and consistency across all engineering work.
    • Stay informed on industry trends, new technologies, and regulatory changes to continuously improve service offerings.
Requirements:


  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field (Masterโ€™s degree preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one state, with the ability to obtain licensure in other states as required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in substation design, with a strong focus on electrical engineering and project management.
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring junior engineers in a technical capacity.
  • In-depth knowledge of substation design principles, equipment (e.g., transformers, breakers, switchgear), and protective relaying systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical codes, standards, and regulations (ANSI, IEEE, NESC, NEC).
  • Experience in business development and client relationship management in the energy or utilities sector.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel to project sites within the Southeast U.S. as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with substation design and analysis software (e.g., SKM PowerTools, ETAP, AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.).
  • Experience with renewable energy integration or utility-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of the regional power grid and regulatory environment in the Southeastern U.S.
